A shared framework for the primary prevention of violence against women & children in Australia

Our Watch (Ourwatch.org.au)has been established to drive nationwide change in the culture, behaviours and power imbalances that lead to violence against women and their children.

Our Watch’s (previously the Foundation to Prevent Violence against Women and their Children) purpose is to raise awareness and engage the community in action to prevent violence against women and their children. They provide national leadership to prevent all forms of violence against women and their children.

Our Watch was conceived of and brought into existence in 2013 by the Commonwealth of Australia and the State of Victoria. The Northern Territory, South Australian, Tasmanian governments have also since become members of the organisation.

Our Watch’s work derives from the government’s commitment to the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010 – 2022 and gives expression to many of the activities in the Second Action Plan 2013–2016 – Moving Ahead.

CEO of Our Watch since November 2015, Mary joined the organisation from the National Heart Foundation of Australia, where she was CEO since 2014.

Ms Barry was previously also the CEO of the Victorian State Emergency Services for 8 years and CEO of the Victorian Association of Health and Extended Care for 6 years. She was originally qualified with a Hospital and Health Social Gerontology Certificate and holds subsequent Post Graduate Diplomas in Health Sciences and Public Policy and Management.

Mary is also the current President of Melbourne Rotary Club, being the third woman to head the Club (following Anne Jacques (2004-05) and Pauline Burren (2008-09). Mary joined Melbourne Rotary Club in 2006 and has served on the Board as a Director and then as a Vice President. Mary was a District Director for two years and headed up the Strategic Planning and Risk portfolio.
