The highs and lows of manufacturing in Australia

The sailboat hardware market and the architectural rigging market are worlds apart, but in Australia they’re both dominated by one powerhouse player.  Ronstan’s end-to-end design, manufacture and distribution operation has grown to become the only serious competitor.

Ronstan’s head office in Melbourne is home to state-of-the-art design facilities, primary manufacturing plant and advanced warehousing and a global distribution system, which handles more than 4 million units each year.  The home market is further supported by sales offices in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth .

Internationally, Ronstan is one of the top three sailboat hardware brands in the world, instantly recognised and respected in 45 countries.  When Ronstan moved into the architectural sector, it had to establish a reputation in this new market. The results speak for themselves. If an Australian architect thinks tensile architecture for a showcase project, he or she thinks Ronstan.

Alistair is Managing Director of Ronstan.  He joined the company in 1976 as Victorian sales representative and has worked his way up the ranks.

In 2014 he received the first annual Sailing Industry Distinguished Service Award at the 45th United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland.  The award is intended to honour a recipient who has distinguished him or herself through continued and unselfish service to the overall advancement of the sailing industry.  Alistair was recognised for his many contributions to the sailing industry and his ability to blend the sport of sailing with business.

Alistair has served on the board of Sail America and founded the International Sailing Summit.  Over the years he has received many honours, including the Centenary Medal, Australian Export Hero, 1999 and 2002 Marine Industry Achiever, and the Governor of Victoria Export Award.

He moved to America twice throughout his 40-year career with Ronstan, once in 1980 and again in 1992 spending a total of six years living and working there.
