NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting will be the annual Changeover,  on FRIDAY 30th June.

This celebration replaces our regular Tuesday meeting for the week.

NONH
In the second half of 2016 members readily took up a call to help a young Lao boy, Nonh, suffering from meningoencephalocele ['MEC'].

Roy and Annie had come across Nonh during a Rotary Central Melbourne ['RCM'] project to re- build two classrooms at Ban Houy Thao, the remote village where Nonh lives with this Mum and Dad.

Nonh had surgery in Phnom Penh late last year and while the operation has been a success there were some complications requiring Nonh to make a second visit to Phnom Penh.  Again the RCM members generously dipped into their pockets to ensure Nonh receives the full treatment he requires, and the visit to Phnom Penh took place this week. Plastic surgery will be required in about 12 months and Nonh will then be free of this condition that has blighted his life to date.
Photo - Nonh after the first surgery.

We can all now fervently hope Nonh can catch up on some missing childhood and take up a sort-of normal life.  Visitors to Laos with Rob Hines, leading a World of Difference tour, early next year might get to see him.

Roy will be lining up to see Nonh and his family again when it is all completed.

STOP PRESS:

DIARY - A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF THE MOST TRAVELLED 13 YEAR OLD FROM BAN HOUY THAO.
Sunday 18TH June
Me and Dad and Ms Tuoy, our chaperone, flew to Phnom Penh.  Like once again, I was there only six months ago! But it’s cool that things are happening. That Mr Roy and his mates from like Kangaroo land are pretty good peeps.

Monday 19th
Into PP [that’s short for Phnom Penh] hospital early for a check-up with the Doctors from France.  The shunt I have is working well and will stay in place.  But my tear ducts are not blocked, it is more like my sexy long eyelashes are getting in the way.  The Doctors wanted to bend them back the right way or something but I’m not having anyone poking around with my eyes while I’m conscious - I’ll let them do it like when I have a full anesthetic. It can wait a bit, I’ve put up with it for so long like another day or so won’t hurt.

Tuesday 20th
Eyelashes fixed today. Doctors say the rest of my treatment like will be plastic surgery in about 12 months or so.  I’ll be real sexy after that.

Wednesday 21st
Out of hospital, hurray.

Thursday 22nd
Mr Wright from Phnom Penh Rotary, who has been a real chum, took me and Dad and Ms Touy on a tour around parts of Phnom Penh today – I’m like a real tourist now, even ate ice cream.  And the news is me and Dad will fly home to Mum tomorrow.

FRANK'S YEAR HAS RECEIVED A BIG KICK START
“I was both amazed, because we had never before had the strength to tackle these big issues, and thrilled that we now had a member group who were going to put their shoulder to the wheel of progress”.  Incoming President Frank O'Brien's comments after the successful Kick Start meeting.

Frank's invitation to 'Kick Start' the next year with a pooling of ideas from those who might be interested saw a roll up of almost half the total  membership!

Twenty-six members met last Sunday morning and under the able facilitation of Warwick a very productive meeting evolved.  The ideas tabled will be promulgated in detail when they have been interpreted and developed into an action plan.  Suffice to state now the emphasis was on the longer term requirement for continuing development of Rotary Central Melbourne rather than changes to the 'business as usual' plans for '17-'18.

Twenty-six members reflect on "where we want to go, and how to get there".

MONIKA AND WOLFGANG JACOBS' BEQUEST
The Board has been advised that Wolfgang Jacobs has made a very generous provision for the club in his will.

His solicitor has written;

"The deceased in his will dated 17 October 2016 left your organisation the sum of $20,000 for a project in the youth service field to be noted "In memory of Wolfgang and Monika Jacobs".

Wolfgang Jacobs.  Member 2006 - 2016
Regretfully we do not have a photo of Monika, who predeceased Wolfgang by approximately six years.
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT IAN RISELEY'S MESSAGE
IAN RISELEY'S CALL INCLUDES "HELP SAVE THE PLANET"

Ian Riseley, Rotary International President for 2017-18, issued a call at the Atlanta Convention on June 14 for Rotary to join the campaign to save the planet from environmental destruction. He did not mention global warming and CO2 emissions but was clearly referring to them.

“It is past time for Rotary to recognise the need for sustainability in everything we do, for the good of Rotary and for the survival of our planet,” he told his 20,000-strong audience in his closing address. “Today environmental issues threaten us all. (Applause). They are having a disproportionate impact on those who are most vulnerable, those to whom Rotary has the greatest responsibility. Yet environmental concerns barely register on the Rotary agenda. The time is long past when environmental sustainability can be dismissed as not a Rotary concern. It is and must be everyone’s concern.”

He called on each club worldwide to plant at least one tree per member to raise environmental awareness, “and recognise our responsibility not only to the people of our planet but to the planet itself on which we live and depend.”

Other points by Ian – who is from Sandringham RC – were:
  • Rotary had taken the past 10 years to raise the proportion of women members from 13% to 20% and at that rate would take another three decades to achieve gender parity. This must be prioritised immediately
  • Only 5% of reported membership is under 40. Most are over 60. “Consider what Rotary will look like in 10-20 years if we don’t get serious about attracting and bringing in younger members to create new generations of members and leaders.”
  • He will ask all clubs to report cash and equivalents invested in humanitarian service, and hours worked in Rotary’s name. This data will be aggregated – not used in any inter-club competitive way – for Rotary’s public relations and marketing.
Ian battled a severe cold throughout his address.
