OUR NEWEST MEMBER

WELCOME THERESE

Therese Robinson, inducted into the club 27th September.

NEXT MEETING  GUEST SPEAKER

Professor Helen Herrman

"Psychiatry’s Central Role in Community Health Care"

Studies have shown that people living with depression and psychosis are twice as likely to die young as other people in the community.

Helen Herrman Partnerships between practitioners, those with lived experience and family carers are needed to improve the poor access to general health services and to mental health care common in our community and elsewhere. Social services organisations do much great work for young people who come from backgrounds of abuse and neglect; however the resources provided are low compared to the size of the problem.

International experience shows that some countries are doing good work with few resources by enlisting, training and setting up supervision for primary health services, volunteers and non-medical workers to provide basic treatment.

Helen Herrman is Professor of Psychiatry at Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health and the Centre for Youth Mental Health, The University of Melbourne.  She is also a Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health in Melbourne and President Elect of the World Psychiatric Association.  She was inducted to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2013.

ALMONER'S CORNER

Allan has advised;

Dick Mitchell was transferred back to Epworth Hospital on Tuesday to have his Achilles tendon operation assessed and for a program to be worked out for future rehabilitation.

A ROTARY STEPPING STONE

Thomas Houlden 18, has found his National Youth Science Forum award last January to be a life-changing experience.

With help from Bendigo RC and his school Bendigo Catholic College, he went on to win a mid-year three-week trip to XLAB in Gottingen, Germany for a more advanced science camp with 19 international students.

XLAB’s 19 students were from eight countries and spoke 12 languages, creating a cultural cocktail while students took in insights from leading-edge scientists in biology, chemistry and physics

I focused on biology, taking courses in neurophysiology, molecular biology and immunology,” Tom says. “We analysed blood samples for specific antigens, genetically altered bacteria, stimulated neuron signals and analysed the visual system of insects.  I got a glimpse into what research is actually like, the failures, the tedium, the obsession with detail, the endless data collection, the successes and most importantly, the dedication to ‘finding things out'.”

New Member Induction.

Guest Speakers:
Jeanette Large (CEO of the Women’s Property Initiative and Vic finalist Telstra Business Womens Awards 2015,) and
Kristie Looney (Officer in Effective Control and Business Development Manager of Property Initiatives Real Estate.

The Women’s Property Initiative (WPI) is a Not For Profit organisation focused on supplying and managing affordable and safe housing for “at risk” women and children.

Commencing in 1996, and governed by a Board of appropriately skilled women, the WPI owns and manages about 68 properties in new housing developments and apartment blocks.

Property Initiatives Real Estate is the social enterprise real estate agency created by the WPI. This is the commercial side of the WPI, and responsible for the management of property generally within a 10km radius of the Melbourne CBD. The objective of this part of the WPI business is to manage the approximately 100 properties on the rent-roll, such that a positive social impact is generated for “at risk” women and children, while still delivering a higher level of service for investors.  All profits from the real estate activities are channelled back to WPI.
