Sheryl Forrester

Shine for Kids – Victorian Programs Coordinator

SHINE for Kids is the only national charity in Australia that works solely to support the children of incarcerated parents. They work to lessen the effects of imprisonment on children and families – and consequently to reduce the likelihood of re-offending – through support, case management and information. They advocate for the rights of children at all levels and believe that our services are needed now more than ever.

Sheryl has been Shine for Kids’ Victorian Programs Coordinator for almost 3 years, with a strong background in arts and literacy. Sheryl has previously worked with Victoria’s Department of Education and Training Arts as Literacy Specialist, and completed her Bachelor of Education at Monash University in 2002 studying at Chisholm Institute. As Shine for Kids Education Support Specialist, Sheryl coordinates education programs mainly in Melbourne’s Western suburbs as well as other LGAs  for children impacted by the incarceration of a parent.

GUEST SPEAKER PRESENATION - LAST TUESDAY

Guest Speaker, Sarah Overton

Human Technology Interface.

Sarah, when not participating in RC Melbourne matters and domestic matters, is employed by KPMG as Manager, Competitive Intelligence.  This intimidating title describes her work in linking human factors with  digital matters.  She (rightly) remarked that we are all concerned that digital is taking over the world.  The business value chain, from seller to consumer has moved from predominately human capital to technology.

Data is now massively abundant.  94% of world data, over all history was accumulated last year and only ½% of it was used in decision-making.  Enter artificial intelligence.  AI / machines are rational.  People, not always.

The world’s top 5 companies in 2007 have been replaced by a different 5 in 2017 – and the new 5 are all digital companies!

Under development now is self-teaching.  Give machine instruction on where to go and let the machine figure out how to get there.

The Cloud means all you want – data, systems – is accessible.  You don’t need to have it on board.

Simultaneous development of machines – robots, instruments, drones, gyroscopes – machines can communicate one to another.  Networking.

The future?  Quoting Sarah, a bit sticky.  Quoting Club Reporter;  a little afraid the gizmos are taking over the world…..

OPERA ON THE YARRA

MEETING REPORT - 6th FEBRUARY

  • Stand-in President, Neville  John opened the meeting and handed over to  Chair, Suvam Ganguli. Actual President Frank was present, but unable to speak due to a medical condition.
  • Visitors
    • Maria Groaner and Elaine Shallue, guests of Elias Lebbos
    • Laura Bird, guest of Acting Pres Neville and potential member who must now withdraw.  Laura has accepted a two-year employment position with St Jude’s in Tanzania.  So we may see her in another two years.
    • Cherry Laing attended spontaneously after finding our club on the internet.  Hopefully she likes what she saw and will be back!
  • Announcements:
    • Anne King: Reminded members of the breakfast for International Women’s day, Wednesday 7th March.  Several members have indicated they will attend and Anne will contact by email.
    • Herb Greenwood: Herb made an impassioned appeal for members to get moving on Opera on the Yarra, scheduled 3rd March at Melbourne Rowing Club.  This will be a fabulous event and a big fundraiser for the club.  It is hoped that it will become an annual event, much sought after.  Herb pointed out that by inviting non-members we get a rare opportunity to fundraise from non-member’s pockets!  Speed is of the essence as there will be only 110 tickets!
    • Stand-in Pres Neville:
      • Mentioned that Geoff Fairhall is alive and well, in the care of his wonderful wife Anne.  They have recently featured in the media on the subject of detection and treatment developments for Alzheimer’s.
      • Seven members attended a meeting of Rotary Club of Southbank, a fellow member of our Batman Cluster.  A visit to Melbourne Rotary (another Batman member) is planned for 14th March. Angus Mitchell will be speaking.
      • Our exchange student, Flavia has joined the John household, where it reported that she and Rebecca chat quite a lot….
    • Tom Callander: Tom reported the passing of David Witner, a long-time supporter of our club’s foundation.
  • Surprisingly the swindle jack potted again.
