"Victoria Police Diverse Community Mentor Program"

The Victoria Police Diverse Community Mentor Program ('VPDCMP') is a collaborative program developed to provide supported pathways for Australians from cultural and linguistically diverse ('CALD') communities seeking employment as sworn members with Victoria Police through participation in a structured mentor program.

'VPDCMP' aims to increase cultural diversity among sworn members within Victoria Police by working with stakeholders to address the recruiting challenges identified by the 'CALD' community.  The 'VPDCMP' will promote social inclusion and enhance community engagement by demonstrating a clear commitment by Victoria Police to employ people from diverse backgrounds.

Senior Sergeant Rachael Goss began working with Victoria Police in 1995 and is now a Regional Training Officer within the North West Metropolitan area. Her career has encompassed general policing operations, training, and law education, and she has led teams within various specialist units such as traffic enforcement, transit and public safety, training, regional health, safety and wellbeing, and regional planning and risk management.

Senior Sergeant Goss holds a Diploma of Business, Diploma of Management, and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.  She is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Organisational Leadership and is the chair of the Victoria Police Diverse Community Mentor Program.

Rachael lives in Melbourne’s east with her two teenage children who are sometimes more challenging than policing.

GUEST SPEAKER REPORT, LAST TUESDAY
President Frank and Warwick Cavell

"Club Strategy Update."

Report on June 2017 Strategy, Planning, Horizons meeting / workshop.

The day was well spent.  22 attendees talked and whittled and developed a real view on directions for the club – three years out.  They have appointed a SAG (not SAGGY) group.  Strategic Advisory Group to oversee the process targeting:
  • Sustainability of the Club
  • Sustainability of finances
  • Membership.  Last year was a fantastic 15 new members.  Next year the focus should be more on business and organisations.
Warwick Cavell:
  • Where do we want to be?
  • What are likely challenges?
  • How will we address the challenges?
It is important to bear in mind that the plan is dynamic.  Feedback welcomed.

Challenges:
  • To build relations with organisations and communities, many of which have philanthropic leanings.  Members with knowledge of such groups and needs, please feedback to Warwick or Frank.
  • Engagement of members
  • Sustained sources of funding
  • Branding and Profile of the Club
Rotary as an Enabler.  Seen as a vehicle for others’ philanthropic directions - Example:  Sonia at HUB who helps disenfranchised women – mostly refugees – with learning skills in cooking and sewing and coincidentally, English.  Can Rotary help this?  Absolutely.  Vocational skills.

A draft 'One Page Plan' will be finished and published soon.

Justine Murphy: A Job Talk with a Difference.
Justine has just returned from the Blue Mountains, the scene of her epic ultra-marathon.  There, she found her love of animals, nature, the outdoors and the conclusion of her contract at Lost Dogs have all aligned. She leaves next Monday to take up a position as Change Manager at Scenic World, Katoomba. Sudden, soul-searching and heart-breaking, but she’s gotta go. And with our Club’s best possible wishes!

Vocational Service Report. Alan Seale, Team Leader.
Alan sees Vocational Service with three elements:
1. Serve others
Our Club does pretty well but not very much in vocational skills.  A big opportunity because Rotary must be just about the largest reservoir of vocational skills in the world!

2. Empower others
Our Club does this very well.  Eg our Police Mentoring program which is in the process of growing to include Ambo Mentoring.

3. Inspire others
A difficult area and one where it would be good to find a way to promote it

Second Exchange Student.
Alan also mentioned Hanna Viegal, a very talented 18 year old fraulein with exceptional talents in several daunting fields, including a beautiful soprano voice – which Alan hopes to join with Michael Lapina’s impressive tenor voice to entertain the Club.  Hanna will be working with VCA and Vic Opera and will be in Australia for 7 weeks.

Alan is looking for help in making her time here fantastic.  In his words, she “doesn’t want to see penguins every weekend”.  Please contact Alan if you can help.
