NEXT MEETING - 30th AUGUST 2016

Stuart Atkins.    "Technology Trends and Digital Innovation"

Social networking is the new ‘word of mouth’. Small to medium businesses often neglect the need to refine an online presence to help build new relationships and profitability.  Stuart will deliver key messages including using word of mouth to your advantage and targeting your business to the most relevant audience for minimal cost tools to generate more business from the online channel.

Stuart specialises in technology, digital disruption and social networking.  He has spoken to thousands of professionals and has worked for a number of leading digital businesses in Australia.  His focus is on empowering audiences to be well armed with trends, be prepared for the advancing disrupters and generate better business outcomes by utilising new channels and strategies to remain relevant and ahead of the competition.

ROTARY and MISSING PERSONS TRAGEDIES

Victoria Police have created a Rotary supported interactive public website to help solve the tragedies of missing persons.

Photo: Roger and Stuart at the VicPol Mentoring Program graduation.

Nationally, more than 35,000 people go missing each year, and though most are soon re-located, more than 1600 remain on the missing-person list.

Links on the VicPol site take inquirers to more details about missing individuals, support services, Crime Stoppers and advice. The site also meshes with Facebook and Twitter.

The site is https://www.vicpolicenews.com.au/get-involved/missing-persons/

The initiative arose from Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey of the homicide squad during his mentorship by Rotary Central Melbourne’s Roger Thornton under the multi-district Police Leadership Program.

ALMONER'S CORNER

Almoner Allan Driver reports;

  • Wolfgang Jacobs is in Epworth Hospital for cancer treatment and while he still feels a strong connection to our club he does not wish to have visitors. He prefers text message communication because It takes too much out of him to respond to direct contact.

  • Dick Mitchell is still in Epworth Hospital after another minor operation, however, it seems that he does not have shingles. The operation he had on his Achilles tendon is progressing well. He would welcome visitors.

  • Roy Garrett’s knee rehabilitation is progressing well and maybe attending his first Rotary meeting next week after the operation.

  • Annie Garrett is in her 10th week of weekly chemotherapy and is going well despite doing it tough.

GROUP VOCATIONAL EXCHANGE - PHILIPPINES

Marjorie Gerlinger is looking for expressions of interest for a four-week Group Vocational Exchange ['GVE'] with D3280 Philippines from mid-Feb to mid-March 2017.

OUTBOUND TEAM:

The GVE team will be comprised of an experienced Rotarian team leader and four suitably qualified team members aged between 25 and 35 years to be sourced and put forward by D9800 Clubs for final selection by District interview on September 18 2016.

The team leader will be selected by separate process and is not part of this call for applicants.

There will be deep cultural immersion in many aspects of the host country.

The theme of the exchange will be aligned with any of:

*Peace and conflict resolution

*Maternal and Child Health

*Water and Sanitation

*Basic Education and Literacy

*Economic and Community Development

*Disease Prevention and Treatment.

Click here to  download the “Team Member” GVE application form 2016-2017

INBOUND TEAM:

MEETING REPORT 23rd AUGUST

Chair:             Anne King

Guests:          Amanda Wendt (RC Melbourne Park),  Rob Soros, John Hinrichs,  David Polonsky

Announcements:

  • Allan Driver (Almoner)  Please see separate report.

  • President Justine: Announced several upcoming new member inductions including DG Neville’s better half Rebecca John in the coming weeks.

Presenter:

Tony Thomas shared with us his recent work with Violence Free Families, its history since being started by Brighton RC and its ongoing challenges with overcoming the entrenched views of the causes of and various solutions to the challenge of overcoming family violence.

Guest Speaker:

Alan Oxley shared with us his experience working to reduce tariffs on international trade. He outlined some of the historical context for Australia’s move towards liberalising our economy, the changes to the GDP mix (from manufacturing into a services economy) and the historical resistance to opening up Australia to competition.

Turning to the Trans Pacific Partnership ('TPP') a trade agreement among twelve Pacific Rim countries including Australia and the USA he suggested that despite the current positioning by USA presidential candidates it was most likely that TPP would be passed by a ‘lame duck’ sitting of congress during the pre-election hiatus. Alan took several questions from the floor.

Chairperson for the day Anne thanked Alan for his insight and his explanation of complex issues.
