David Parkin OAM: Leadership IS the key

Whether it’s business, education, family, government or sport, effective leadership underpins almost all positive outcomes.

We can talk about talent, resources, opportunity and even luck, but my life in education, business, family and professional sport, says the quality of leadership of any organisation or institution, is the key to its success.

What actually constitutes good leadership?

David has been involved with Australian Football at the elite level since 1961, as a player, coach, fitness adviser, administrator and media commentator. He captained the 1971 Hawthorn premiership and coached the Hawthorn 1978, Carlton 1981, 1982 and 1995 premierships. In 2002 he was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame, and in 2010, into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame.

A parallel career in education saw him teach in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions from 1962 to the present. Currently. he is an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University, in the School of Exercise and Nutritional Science, having received an Honorary Doctorate in 2013.

A prostate cancer survivor, he has written extensively on the topics of children in sport, men’s health, coaching, leadership, motivation and teams. Currently he is the Patron of the Male Bag Foundation, which is a group of men and women, who ride ex Australia Post motor bikes all over Australia, to raise money to purchase prostate cancer diagnostic machines, for rural and regional hospitals.
