GUEST SPEAKER NEXT MEETING
Inspector Andrew Miles
Rotary Peace Center (Bangkok) Residential Program – “Reflections”

In 2015, Andrew was nominated by Melbourne District 9800 as the 2016 Victoria Police Rotary Peace Fellow and earlier this year he participated in an 11 week residential peace and conflict resolution program at the Rotary Peace Center, Chulalongkorn University.

As a Constable Andrew performed community policing and crime investigation duties including the investigation of serious and major crime. He has also performed operational supervision duties and corporate roles including Human Resource Management and Performance Management.

Andrew became a Commissioned Officer in 2005 and since then has been involved in several roles including Leadership Development, Local Area Commander, Investigation & Response Manager, and Manager of the Learning Development & Standards Division at the VicPol Academy.

Andrew has also been involved in the co-development and implementation of the Victoria Police Cultural, Community and Diversity Education Strategy, developed to address the Victoria Police response to a High Court Settlement alleging racial profiling against Victoria Police.

PAUL HARRIS BREAKFAST - REPORT
25th Paul Harris Breakfast packed out
About 275 guests from 31 Rotary Clubs filled the 17th Floor RACV dining room on November 21. It was the 25th annual event and raised more than $11,000 net for the Rotary Foundation. The guest roll was well up on the 194 in 2015 ($8500 raised) and 209 last year ($8000).

District Governor Peter Frueh said the district had admitted nearly 800 new Rotarians in the past three years, meaning that a third of current Rotarians are recent arrivals.

District Foundation Director and PDG Dennis Shore gave certificates to RCs Camberwell, Glenferrie, Melbourne, Southbank and Williamstown for donating at least USD1500 to polio eradication.  Camberwell RC was highest giver per member and Rotary Central Melbourne was runner-up.

Dennis said Foundation had immunised 2.5b children and cut the polio annual death rate from 300,000 just 30 years ago to 14 this year. “We will not rest until polio joins smallpox as the only extinct disease viruses,” he said.

Foundation has been a champion of peace, supporting establishment of the UN where 49 Rotarians were delegates, advisers and consultants. Rotary conceived and wrote the charter for UNESCO, and five Rotarians have served as UN Assembly President. To date 1200 Rotary Peace Fellows have been trained, including 30 from D9800.

Millions in the third world enjoy clean water, health care (especially for mothers and babies) and education via the Foundation.

This year’s guest speaker was Daniel Flynn, co-founder of Thankyou, a reverse consumerism company that has invested all its profit of $5.5m to date in humanitarian work in 20 countries. Daniel gave a spell-binding account of challenges muscling his own-brand bottled water into a market dominated by retail giants.

SPECIAL DIK WORKING BEE

There will be a working bee at DIK after our club meeting on Tuesday 28th November.

As you probably know, our club supports the Donations in Kind (DIK) warehouse in Footscray financially and with working bees a couple of times a year. This particular effort is important as DIK is moving to a new warehouse in the same complex to reduce the effect of a rent increase.

Many hands make light work and it would be great if you could join us.

The warehouse is at 400 Somerville Rd, West Footscray VIC 3012 and we expect to be there from about 9:30am. There is no fixed time for your involvement so we'd be pleased to see you for 1 hour or 4 hours.

A few of us will be driving there after the meeting at the RACV club so if you'd like a lift please let me know  - contact Rob Hines.
