NEXT MEETING

Guest Speaker
Rachael Johnson,  CEO Victorian Ports Association [Melbourne].

The Evolving "New" Role of Victorian Ports Corporation {Melbourne'} 'VPCM'.

Rachel will be providing an informative update on the relatively newly created VPCM and the critical role it plays for trade, economic development, tourism and jobs in Victoria.

VPCM is responsible for safe navigation in Port of Melbourne’s waters and for the management of Station Pier, Victoria’s premier cruise shipping facility, as well as the development of the cruise industry for the benefit of the Victorian economy.

Rachel Johnson took up the role of inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Victorian Ports Corporation (Melbourne) (VPCM) in November 2016, following the Victorian Government’s successful leasing of the Port of Melbourne’s commercial operations to a private sector operator.

She has held senior positions in New South Wales government bodies as well as in a number of high profile private sector companies.

GUEST SPEAKER 6th MARCH - REPORT

Uttam Ganguli  Past District Governor District 3219

"Rotary in India and the Polio Plus Project"

Uttam Ganguli was reintroduced to give the main talk.  After an exchange of gifts and flags, we learned that Uttam joined RC Rabindra Sarobar Calcutta in 1993 as the Charter Secretary and has served the club and district in various positions.  He currently chairs the Polio Plus project and is focused on finishing the job to eradicate polio worldwide.

In India, there are 38 Rotary districts across 3 zones, with a total of 143,941 members.  The country punches above its weight in many aspects, including contributions to Rotary Foundation (India is responsible for 84.3% of SE Asia’s annual funding)

"BUSYFEET"  IS GROWING

Expanding special kids’ horizons.

"The first group was five kids at Stonnington. Run by Chadstone East Malvern RC, it now has 15 kids and a waiting list.   Caroline Springs RC runs BusyFeet Melton and Hillside; Altona  City RC runs the Hobsons Bay Cluster; Canterbury RC and Camberwell RC run BusyFeet Boroondara; and North  Brighton RC runs BusyFeet Bayside."

Special kids benefit from getting out of the house and having safe fun. And the kids’ hard-pressed parents and carers need a break. Both needs are met in the BusyFeet dance and movement program pioneered by Chadstone-East Malvern Rotary.

The kids, aged from 6 to 16, have disabilities including Downs Syndrome, autism, deafness and palsy. But they all enjoy BusyFeet’s music, rhythm, dressing up and audience applause.

Nine other clubs are inquiring. BusyFeet can be launched interstate using Victorian start-up templates.

A group’s needs include a venue, dance teachers (often professionals) and supervisors, making start-ups time consuming. Kids may require one-on-one help.  All adults are volunteers. Friends, school people and local residents get to know Rotary’s ethos.

Kids who initially were apprehensive and dragging their heels now run through the hall door to get their name tags, even if they’ve been unwell that day at school.
Sessions run weekly during the school year, typically from 4.30-5.30 weekdays or 11-12 on Saturdays.

MEETING 6th MARCH - REPORT

Opening
Our meeting was held in the evening at International House. Members gathered in the aptly named Gathering Room which included a display of Display Boards, one of which listed the names of the Fraternitas Awardees, which our Club sponsors. Thereafter, we went on a tour of International House, conducted by various International House (IH) students. There are over 300 students in residence.

Members then enjoyed a dinner with the International House students in their dining hall before migrating to the adjacent Royce Abbey Room for regular proceedings.  Royce Abbey, a member of RC Essendon, was Rotary International President in 1989-90, and his term included milestones including incorporating women into Rotary and re-establishing clubs in the former Soviet Block.  Peter Duras called Mr Abbey a “true international diplomat.”

Chair Russell Rolls opened the meeting, and Past District Governor Dennis Shore gave the toast.

Announcements
  • Elias Lebbos made two announcements regarding upcoming Community Service Team activities:
  • On 14 April we are headed back to the Royal Talbot for the annual working bee in the hospital’s sensory garden;
  • On 11-13 May we are organising an all-weekend working bee at Camp Getaway.  More details will follow.  Please contact Elias to register your interest in participating.
  • President Frank O’Brien provided a wrap on last weekend’s successful Opera on the Yarra fundraising event, which Herb Greenwood chaired and Michael Lapina co-ordinated.  The musical performance was, by all accounts, superb, and the food was excellent too.  Well done to all involved.
  • President Frank also reminded members to book online via TryBooking.com to attend next week’s Angus Mitchell Oration, to be given by current RI president Ian Riseley at the Sofitel and hosted by Melbourne RC.

Sister Club established.
Our guest speaker, Uttam Ganguli (yes, Suvam’s dad), was introduced for an exchange of documents marking the official commencement of RC Melbourne Central’s sister club agreement with Uttam’s home club, RC Rabindra Sarobar Calcutta (District 3291) in India.

Project Report
Leader of the Youth Projects Team, Stuart Ellis, provided an update on projects and particularly put out a call for volunteers to host a young woman from France (a former youth exchange student) who plans to visit Melbourne for a few weeks in May as part of her English language studies.  Also, any members who wish to host an Overseas Student Meal at their homes should reach out to Stuart.

Closure
Russell Rolls closed the meeting – there was no swindle, which means no one (or maybe indeed everyone) was a winner.

Finally a reminder Rob Hines is coordinating a trip to India in January 2019, coinciding with the District 3291 conference – look for more details in your email inbox.
