FROM THE LAST MEETING
Rotary Central Melbourne.
Report of In-Person Meeting held Tuesday 15 April 2025, at RACV City premises.

Chair:                            Rob Hines
Acting President:        Neville John

Rob opened the meeting and proposed a toast to Rotary International.
Actg. President Neville acknowledged the traditional owners of the land on which we were meeting and welcomed all to the meeting.  He then introduced the guest speaker Ruhee Meghani. A special welcome to guest Mia Fornasaro as well.

Guest Speaker:
Ruhee Meghani.  “The Ripple Effect – Climate, Wellbeing and Our Responsibility”.

Ruhee is the founder of Allied Collective, a local business that facilitates organisations challenged with reshaping systems and policies for a better future.

Climate change is one specific that is now affecting organisations and people’s well-being, calling for creative innovation and leadership.  This was dramatically presented in a futuristic video where the year was 2059 in Mumbai.   The city was clouded by heavy pollution and stall keepers included oxygen ‘shots’ for purchase, much the same way as coffee is sold  today.

Ruhee emphasised the emotional effects of climate change and the resultant effect rising temperatures are having on well-being. Statistics support climate anxiety as a factor in the increase in domestic violence and a cause for more couples deciding not to have children.
She highlighted the case with discussion on how climate change has various effects across life’s stages and posed a question about our legacy ‘What do we want to be remembered for?”  A matter of what responsibility do we accept.  This is not a spectator sport, it requires our participation, working with other generations [younger in our specific case!] to co-design outcomes. The greatest gift we can leave behind is a clean climate for our successive generations.

Ruhee’s talk concluded with an active question time which included giving credit to her considerable yoga training assisting her to take a holistic view of the issues noted in her talk.  Likewise, her view that connecting with nature provides a resting place for our well-being.

SLEEPING BAGS NEEDED NOW FOR THE HOMELESS
SLEEPING BAG APPEAL – SLEEPING BAGS NEEDED NOW FOR THE HOMELESS

Rotary Central Melbourne supports Youth Projects (located in Hosier Lane) and St Mary’s House of Welcome (located in Fitzroy) who provide a wide range of services to homeless young people in the CBD and inner suburbs of Fitzroy/Collingwood.

This time last year, we provided a large number of sleeping bags to both organisations. These were quickly distributed and much appreciated, and we want to do so again. The need is real as the numbers sleeping rough have escalated and temperatures are dropping. Our objective is to collect or purchase at least 100 sleeping bags and distribute them by early May.

We have already received support from Bunnings Port Melbourne and we now need your support in any the following ways:
1.       Donate any unwanted sleeping bags your family, your friends or you may have (in good condition that are winter grade).
2.       Visit your local op shops to see if you can purchase winter grade sleeping bags (in good condition) for modest prices and drop them in to one of the committee members listed below.
3.       Donate to Rotary Central Melbourne by depositing funds into RCM’s bank account (details below) by 15 April 2025 – and note as “sleeping bags”. Forty dollars will purchase one bag. If you plan to donate funds, please contact Rebecca John (email below) and let her know how many bags you are donating funds for. We will then purchase bags from a supplier who sell high quality winter grade bags at a very competitive price.
4.       If you have sleeping bags you can bring them to the Club’s “in person” meeting on Tuesday 15 April 2025. Alternatively, you may contact any of the following Community Service committee members either to drop sleeping bags off with them or for pick up from you, by Tuesday 29 April 2025:

·         Tom Callander (East Malvern) tcallander@rigbycooke.com.au
·         Rebecca John (Eaglemont) beng1@iprimus.com.au
·         Rohan Williams (St Kilda) rdwrcm@gmail.com
·         Peter Duras (Southbank) peter.duras@bigpond.com

Sleeping bags should preferably be “zero or minus 4 degrees centigrade” grade, but all will be gratefully accepted.

RCM Banking details are as follows:
Bank Westpac
BSB - 033000
Account Number – 791085
