NEXT WEEK - GUEST SPEAKER
Euan Murdoch

"Melbourne Recital Centre – A venue for the 21st Century"

Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in the southern hemisphere, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer.

Drawing fundamental influence from the traditional box shape of European concert halls, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium.

The centre offers all the key ingredients to become a global leader in the production, promotion and presentation of high quality music of all kinds, showcasing Australia’s best to the world and hosting the world’s best in Australia.
Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in the southern hemisphere, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer.

Euan was appointed CEO of the Melbourne Recital Centre in September 2016.  He came to Melbourne with a diverse background in music education, performance and leadership of New Zealand’s premier musical institutions.  Most recently, Euan was Director of Te Koki New Zealand School of Music based at Victoria University of Wellington, N. SOCIAL MEDIA AUDIT

Daniel Lim is working on improving the Club's Social Media presence with a view to attracting new members and supporting our projects and fundraisers. To assist him with this it would be very useful for him to know which members use social media and, if so, what type.

Please click here to go to a google worksheet and fill in your social media profile.

If you are having any problems, e-mail Daniel at daniel0331@gmail.com and he will be pleased to assist.

GUEST SPEAKER'S PRESENTATION 14th MARCH
Pike Peters, President RC of Docklands

"Solar Smiles Dental Charity"

Pike Peters is President of the Rotary Club of Docklands (RCD), a proud sponsor of the Solar Smiles Dental Charity.  RCD is a small club, struggling for members but punching above their weight - they initiated the "Festival of Giving" in Docklands.  These projects help them connect with a wider community.

Oral hygiene is a problem around the world. Member Kim Groizard promoted the project for Cambodia, and in 2015 the project SOLAR SMILES Dental Charity was born with the support of the Rotary Club of Docklands. They identified a need in Cambodia, particularly in remote regions.

SOLAR SMILES located a portable solar powered backpack dental chair and equipment (from a US charity organisation).  This meant dental treatment could be taken to communities, in a single back pack, rather than them having to travel extensively to cities (or simply miss out).

In January, 2017, the first group travelled to Cambodia with the packs and an Australian dentist, and delivered over $134,000 worth of dental treatment to Cambodian children and young people, many of whom had never received dental treatment before. The project also sources toothbrushes and toothpaste to distribute.  Did you know that a simple toothbrush and tube of toothpaste cost the equivalent of AUD422.80 when compared against a rural salary/income in Cambodia.

Pike brought with him a sample of the portable pack, weighing 14kg, it can be carried to remote areas as a back-pack; it is simple, robust and easy to use.

The Club has sourced two more chairs that are on their way to Nepal to support rural communities with dental health in that country.

MEETING REPORT  14th MARCH
President Justine welcomed Rana Ebrahimi (a guest of George and interest in Rotary), Pike Peters (speaker) and Metta Chalapati (reporting back on NYSF).
Chairman Alan Seale read out a series of medical one-liners from Gerard Hogan – fully up to Gerard’s standard.

Announcements
  • Marjorie Gerlinger requested volunteers to help with social media – at/for the conference.
  • President Justine requested members to talk to Millie about staying on for Sunday to celebrate a successful conference (Sunday brunch).

Project Report - Fundraising: HERB GREENWOOD

Herb noted the Club’s “Sporting Chance” Cancer Foundation $7.5K donation, $500 donated to International House, and the club is constructing a new classroom in Laos.

He also mentioned that Nonh will need further surgery and on return to Melbourne Roy will bring us up to date on that.

On May 20th, the club is planning a small wine auction, a social event.  Then later in year (October) a larger auction.  The team is also considering projects with our indigenous community.

NYSF Presentation
Our nominee to National Youth Science F,  Metta Chalapati presented her feedback and thanks to the club.

Metta described her attendance at NYSF in Canberra for 12 days, part of the >10,000 alumni since it began.  She was part of the NEWTON group (Ed: obviously a group with gravitas), that visited the space telescope; and Metta pointed out the learning that would not occur in everyday school. They visited the National Computing Infrastructure (NCI), and at ANU saw and experienced a “complete silence – no echo” room. They gained perspective on STEMM and the careers available, and were able to explore Canberra as well. Metta was fascinated by the critical thinking lecture.  Overall it was an eye opening experience.

Metta thanked the club and told us that her planned career in engineering was prompted by her NYSF experience.
