NEXT MEETING: 16th FEBRUARY 2016: GUEST SPEAKER DR MEREDITH DOIG

PRESENTATION: Pathways for Diversity Education

Pathways for Diversity Education is a coalition of faith and free-thought groups.  Among other things, it offers an educational program for Year 10 students, in which three young adults tell of their family background and how they arrived at their own ethics and beliefs.  Their stories illustrate major philosophies and faiths that are part of Australia’s rich heritage: Abrahamic and Asian religions, humanism and atheism, indigenous spirituality and sustainability activism.  Along with matters of ethics and belief, presenters can respond to questions on life issues such as prejudice and bullying, the refugee experience, sexual orientation and living with disability.
The first of its kind in Australia, Pathways aims to extend interfaith dialogues to “inter-belief”, demonstrating the possibility of mutual respect across wide differences of world view, which can thereby strengthen social cohesion.

Dr Meredith Doig is Chair of Pathways for Diversity Education Inc, and President of the Rationalist Society of Australia.
After a business career in Ford Australia, Rio Tinto and ANZ Bank, for the last 15 years Meredith has been a professional company director and governance consultant.  Directorships have included the Port of Melbourne Corporation, Melbourne University Council and its subsidiary MUSUL, the Graduate Union of the University of Melbourne, V/Line Passenger Pty Ltd, the Victorian Channels Authority, Fintona Girls’ School and the Driver Education Centre of Australia. She is currently on the Council of Federation University Australia, and the board of Federation Training.
She has also been a facilitator of the Company Directors Course for the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a moderator with the Cranlana Programme on Ethics and the Good Society.

Michael Goldsworthy

Aged Care Today, Aged Care and Health Care Tomorrow… Where customer choice and market forces rule

Michael Goldsworthy is widely known throughout Australia for assisting boards, chief executive officers and executive/senior management teams of not for profits in governance, strategy, amalgamations, mergers and partnerships.

Over the last 26 years Michael has worked with over 6,000 community businesses (not for profits) throughout Australia, working within a framework of transformational change, strategic planning and project management.  During this time he has also undertaken 258 amalgamations and mergers.
Michael spoke on the current and emerging/future big picture of the human services industry and the challenges facing leadership teams (boards, chief executive officers and executive/senior management teams).

He remarked on the paradigm shift from a welfare to a market  framework; the need for people and organisations to change in response and the opportunities for new services and products.  He observed that the major growth was in the home care sector with more people aging in place.  Residential care was growing less in absolute numbers and moving more to a sub acute health care service.  The opportunity in this sector is to start providing aged care allied health and medical services.

Not for profit providers will need to adapt to these changes and innovate to compete with the growing private , for profit providers.
