After a brief introduction by Michelle, our guest speaker Jeffrey Pang provided a highly informative presentation on the link between hearing loss and dementia. Jeffrey outlined recent scientific research that had identified this link and briefly described how our ears and brains change as we age. He also shared a recent study that had shown that the full time use of hearing aids by people with moderate hearing loss could prevent further decline in cognitive performance. Jeffrey concluded by encouraging us to regularly have our hearing checked and to seek independent audiologists who are not incentivized to sell  specific brands of hearing aids.

Michelle thanked Jeffrey for his presentation and presented a small gift as a token of our appreciation.

Michelle then invited the following Member Announcements:
  • Rohan Williams presented Cecily Neil with a Paul Harris Fellowship for her leadership of the International Service Team over the past two years and her personal contribution to clean water projects in South East Asia.
  • Rohan also shared that Rotary Central Melbourne was one of only 8 clubs in District 9800 that had received a RI Citation from RI President Jennifer Jones for successfully meeting our membership, service and fundraising goals for 2022/23.
  • Frank O’Brien informed members that Rotary Echuca-Moama would hold their 75th Anniversary in Echuca on Saturday 23/9.
  • Frank also provided a short update on Donations in Kind.
  • Neville John reminded members who had volunteered for the Bunnings Collingwood sausage sizzle on Saturday 9/9.
  • Neville also shared that Roy Garrett and John Ilott are recovering from recent surgeries and would welcome contact from members.
Michelle thanked members and partners who had attended the dinner on Tuesday 29/8 at the Emerald Hotel and reminded members about the Club Strategy Day on Saturday 23/9.

Michelle closed the meeting by quoting from the Dalai Lama “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion”.

Tom Ponissi is a Monash University student in his final semester of a double degree in Laws (Honours) / Global Studies (Human Rights).

He recently completed an internship at the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, where he and nine other law students created a project called Informed Choice for the Voice. Their mission is to provide fact-based information to the community about the referendum.

Tom works at ANTaR (the Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation) Victoria as a campaign coordinator.
