President Rhys Williams – Welcome to country. Rhys welcomed Prof Timothy Lynch, and guest.

John invited Prof Timothy Lynch to address members and guests and share his thoughts on Why the United States is NOT in decline – whoever wins the presidential election.

Despite a turbulent election and deep polarisation, Prof Lynch will argue there are reasons to be confident about America’s prospects. Prof Lynch explored factors contributing to US strength, from its enduring Constitution to the weakness of its competitors, like China.

Prof Lynch posed the following 10 provocations and proceeded to discuss his views on each point.
The 10 provocations:
  1. Nationalism is a powerful hold on both sides of politics
  2. Constitution is still in place, both parties to use it better
  3. America is in a benign part of the world with neighbours in the north and south who are primarily friendly.
  4. American colonial legacy is far more positive than other British colonies.
  5. America is a religious free market, does not have religious conflict.
  6. Immigrant nation. Most groups have moved there except African Americans.
  7. Significant Economic power.
  8. World’s most sophisticated military machine in world history.
