GUEST SPEAKER NEXT TUESDAY
Acting Inspector Peter Bitton

"Victorian Police Leaders Mentor Program"

As part of this year’s Vic Pol LMP Peter has teamed up with Rotary, North Melbourne Football Club and Basketball Victoria to deliver a careers and sports program for youth in Wyndham.  The aim of the project is to give participants an opportunity to gain part-time employment and affiliation with a local sporting club. The project’s theme is Social Cohesion.

Peter is Acting Inspector of the Wyndham Police Service Area, based at Werribee Police Station.  He joined the "VPLMP" in September 2016.

Peter has been a member of Vic Pol for 24 years with a broad experience in both country and metropolitan areas.  He has spent the majority of his time as a detective investigating illicit drug crime, armed robberies and other serious crimes.  Peter is married, a father of two and lives in the same area where he works. Although some see this as a negative he believes it is integral in his determination to make Wyndham a safe place to live.

FUNDRAISING - OUR BIG CHALLENGE
AN IMPASSIONED REQUEST FOR DONATION OF GOODS

FOR OUR MAJOR FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR.

GUEST SPEAKER PRESENTATION, LAST TUESDAY
Chairman George introduced Tamra Keating, Director of Marketing and Development at International House.  International House ['IH'] opened by PM Robert Menzies in 1957 with 28 male residents.  It was primarily to cater for Colombo Plan tertiary students studying in Melbourne at a time when there was deep suspicion of Asians such that they found it difficult to get rental accommodation. Melbourne Rotary along with some local philanthropy assisted financially and Rotary has maintained a close relationship with IH ever since.

Today IH is home for around 330 students of 45 nationalities with about 40% from local families.  IH prides itself in valuing cultural differences and tolerance across the dozens of national, religious and ethnic backgrounds of its students.  As an example, IH runs national evenings featuring the dress and cuisine of a specific student's home country.  Tamra believes whilst the “Yellow Peril” has long gone, social tensions in modern society are still a challenge and IH is as relevant today as ever.
DISTRICT CONFERENCE 2018

President Frank is very pleased to invite all associated with our club to 'Conference' next March.

" This year's District Conference is in Warrnambool from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 March 2018.  March is the perfect time to visit Warrnambool.  As is the norm, this Conference is being organised by Balwyn Rotary, the home of DG Peter Frueh.

Please now consider whether you are able to attend. Early Bird Conference bookings/registrations close on 30 November 2017.

Our On To Conference Co-ordinator, is Sarah Overton, and Sarah will be pleased to help with any questions.  You should book accommodation as soon as possible. Our Club has made a limited block booking at the Central Court Motel, 581 Raglan Pde, Warrnambool ( www.centralcourt.com.au ) and rooms can be reserved via Sarah - Standard Queen units are $135 p/night and Standard Twin $155 p/night. Details can be seen on the motel website. You can obviously arrange separate accommodation should you wish.

Also please let Sarah know if you plan to attend our Club Dinner at the Steakhouse Restaurant attached to the Central Court Motel on the Friday evening. All Club Dinners are being held at various venues on Friday 16 March after the Welcome event at Flagstaff Hill.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Conference in Warrnambool. Don't forget to book before the Early Bird offer closes."

MEETING REPORT - TUESDAY 15th AUGUST.
Chairman;  George Mackey

Guests; Brett Jones

Announcements;
  • Marjorie Gerlinger reported that Brian Downie is doing well after a knee replacement operation
  • Stuart Ellis recommended we consider hosting an international university student to a Sunday lunch, a plan to engage our visitors a bit more with the Victorian community
  • Russell Rolls announced another DIK working bee on September 16th from 9am to 1pm.  He also requested members send him their volunteer hours.  President Frank was stumped when asked for a precise definition of a “volunteer hour”.  A work in progress!

Fundraising Report;

Herb Greenwood presented the fundraising plan for the year which features two major events, the Grand Auction Dinner on October 26 (budget $20k) and Opera on the Yarra on March 3rd next year (budget $7k). The smaller fundraisers include the Bunnings BBQs (Budget $4k) and Committee fundraising ($4k).

 The auction will be held at the Town Hall and is sponsored by the City.  Its success will ultimately depend on members securing auction items and bringing guests.  The Board has yet to decide on which charity will be the primary beneficiary of the auction.

Guest Speaker;
Please see separate report in this BULLETIN.
