Annabel Brown, Project and Research Manager, Centre for Policy Development ['CPD']
"The Asia Dialogue on Forced Migration"
CPD's Vision statement, as extracted from their web page, is;
CPD develops long-term policies to promote shared prosperity and sustainable wellbeing. We are independent, values-driven and future focused. Our goal is to develop practical and innovative policy ideas for Australia’s long-term future and foster a collaborative environment to make them achievable.
In 2015, the Centre for Policy Development convened the first of six meetings of the Asia Dialogue on Forced Migration. The Dialogue brings together policy makers and experts from government, NGOs, policy and academic institutions and international organisations, each of whom acts in their personal capacities to support the development of a more effective, durable and dignified approach to ‘forced migration’.
Typically, forced migratory movements involve the most vulnerable people and are proving the most difficult for governments around the world to manage. Often an element of deception or coercion exists, including human trafficking and threats to life and livelihood arising from natural or man-made causes.
Annabel Brownis Program Manager of the Asia Dialogue on Forced Migration for CPD. She is an experienced adviser and facilitator with over 15 years’ experience supporting effective social and economic development in Australia and the Asia-Pacific. Annabel has particular expertise leading research and evaluation projects focused on understanding policy influence, advocacy, leadership development, governance, accountability and empowerment. Agencies and networks she has worked with include Transparency International, Oxfam, WaterAid, the Secretariat of Pacific Community, the Australian Public Service Commission and the Australian Aid Program.
Annabel has a Masters in International Development from RMIT University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia, majoring in Philosophy. She is passionate about generating knowledge, through collaborative processes, and using that to improve policy and practice.

Donors pledge $1.2 billion to end polio
On 12 June, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, global leaders and key donors took the stage at the Rotary International Convention. Standing shoulder to shoulder in front of more than 20,000 Rotarians, each pledged their support to end polio, committing a total of $1.2 billion to global eradication efforts.
The additional funding will go toward disease surveillance, outbreak response, and the vaccination of more than 400 million children annually. If realized, these historic pledges will drastically shrink the $1.5 billion funding gap that stands in the way of reducing polio cases to zero worldwide. In 2017, only six cases of polio caused by the wild virus have been reported.

Marjorie has passed the following note about Bernie's recovery from a hip fracture.
"The upshot of the visit to the specialist was that the lack of pain probably means the fracture is healing and he can now do gentle walking with a walking stick and to contact the doctor if the pain returns and see him again in a month if no problems.
So still fingers crossed. All being well you might see him next week."

GERARD (nee HOGAN) ‘THE JOKER’
He’s here at the start and if your luck is in, he’s here at the end:
Fresh from a fortnight’s spell (maybe it was Le Tour de France!!), Gerard got straight into celebrating birthdays & anniversaries:
Members Birthdays during the week – Campbell Chambers (16/7) fresh from his hosting the Neighbours at Le Tour de France; Bruce Heron (18/7), almost installed as Speaker Programme, Cultivator Extraordinaire; Warwick Cavell (21/7); Sarah Overton (22/7); and Russell (Will He Ever Return) Rolls (23/7).
Partner birthdays – Con Matsamakis [Stella] (25/7); Pam Robertson (28/7) who with Doug is about to celebrate with a tour to the Kimberleys W.A.; Pauline O'Brien (31/7) who with Frank is about to celebrate a big birthday at Royal Mail Dunkeld, Vic.
Wedding Anniversaries – War [wick and Jill (30/7), 40 years, and they are still asking how she could do it, especially with Warwick!!
Not satisfied with that record, Gerard launched into a couple of yodelling songs in honour of our Youth Exchange Student, Flavia Minikus, making her first appearance at the Club after arriving on Saturday. Who would have thought that Rob Hines would have guessed Frank Ifield yodelling, he must have been in the UK at the time, and worse, Frank O’Brien guessing the Aussie Rita Schneider yodelling whatever. The 2 winning tickets went into the Swindle....and very quickly out again!

FLAVIA MINIKUS (Student Exchange) HITS TOWN
Welcome Flavia.
We hope you have a very enjoyable stay within Rotary in Melbourne and Australia over your 12 months with us. Flavia is from Wettingen, Switzerland.
Flavia was our guest at today’s meeting (as she will be throughout the year) and in a Q and A with Stuart, she said she was looking forward to getting to know a lot more of Australia. Her father, Corrado, is the President of the Wettingen Rotary Club and her mother, Paolo, is a gynaecologist in Zurich which is about 30 mins from their home town.
Stuart and Jo, Frank and Pauline and Anne King have been helping Flavia assimilate before she settles in with her first host family in Kew. Flavia is all set to conquer Kew High School (1200 students) from 26 July. "It’s a small world", one of Flavia’s favourite languages (she has 4) is French and the French Coordinator at KHS is Swiss/French!
In closing, Flavia exchanged Club banners with Pres Frank.
Regretfully there was no report of Guest Speaker Rachael's presentation. Rachael is a mentoree in the VicPol program and her mentor is Warwick Cavell.
