NEXT  MEETING, 3rd JULY - GUEST SPEAKER

Michael Harden - Melbourne editor and restaurant critic for Australian Gourmet

"the Melbourne-style Cafe"

The “Melbourne-style cafe” can now be found in New York, London, Paris and across Asia. Our unique approach to cafe culture has become one of our world-renowned dining scene’s most successful exports.

Discover how a handful of youthful entrepreneurs in the 1980s and 1990s found a new way to serve breakfast (yes, avocado toast is in the mix) and invented a style that took on the world.

Michael Harden worked in restaurants in various parts of the world for 15 years to support his writing habit and now spends a lot of his time writing about restaurants. He is Melbourne editor and restaurant critic for Australian Gourmet Traveller and a regular contributor to a number of other local and international publications. He’s the author of 15 books, including one on Lygon Street families and the De Bortoli wine family, and is an ambassador for Australia’s Eat Drink Design Awards.

PRESIDENT FRANK'S FAREWELL
A copy of President Frank's review of the 2017-18 year is available to all.

If you wish to receive a copy of Frank's review [together with the full annual report and a history of the club's first 30 years] please contact Rob Soros or Marjorie Gerlinger.

We are pleased to post here Frank's summary of highlights in 2017-18:

President’s review of past year
SUMMARY
Well, in keeping with Gerard’s tunes, “it’s time for me to say goodbye”.

To try and briefly summarise is not easy but let me leave you with seven highlights of so many (apologies if you beg to differ):
1. We raised over $56,000, through our own efforts and grants this Rotary year for various charities and Club projects.
2. We entered into our first International Sister Club Agreement in 22 years.
3. We have supported an International Youth Exchange student for the first time in 11 years.
4. We inducted 11 new members.
5. We successfully focussed on member retention by, inter alia, ensuring each member had the opportunity to participate in Club projects and activities,
6. We received two District 9800 Recognitions, and
7. We had plenty of fun and fellowship along the way.

THANK YOU
1. Pauline – She has fully supported me in the lead up to and throughout this year. She has provided wise counsel and regular volunteering support. Without her, this role would have been much more time consuming. A real team effort. She might even be able to access the computer again!
2. Marjorie – What can I say? She is not called ‘JAM’ for nothing – Just Ask Marjorie. Thank you for all your support.
3. My Club Board – A huge thanks for your energetic support and contribution. A special thanks to Board members who are retiring after multiple years of service – Marjorie (already mentioned but she deserves it), Alan, Kevin, Neil, Paul and Stuart.
4. Each and every Club member – Thank you each and everyone for your continuing involvement. I hope you’ve all enjoyed the year.
5. Assistant Governor Kate Strain – Thanks Kate. It has been great and reassuring to have you as our Batman Cluster AG. I have really appreciated your support.

BEST WISHES NEVILLE AND SUZETTE
Neville and Suzette, Pauline and I wish you well. I know, Neville, you have been working very diligently behind the scenes already and all is in readiness, including surplus funds, for another great year.

PRESIDENTIAL CITATION
And you know what, with all our achievements this Rotary year, I can advise that we have easily achieved a Rotary Presidential Citation. Well done to everyone. We do have a strong and vibrant Club. We all have much to be proud of.

So, it’s over and out…. as the last of nine Charter members who became President of Rotary Central Melbourne (there were 36 Charter members) and the first of 31 Presidents to have their AFL team win the Premiership in their Presidential year!!!

Thank you one and all for placing your confidence in me and I believe, together, we have Made A Difference.
Frank O’Brien

PRESIDENT NEVILLE'S CHALLENGE
In a dynamic presentation President Neville entertained us with tales of his beginning in Rotary Central Melbourne and challenged us with focus on community and connectedness into the future.

Neville’s vision for our 2018-19 year is best summarised in his own words:
“Our 2018/19 Plan is focusing on the Fabric of the club to ensure it continues to grow, modernise and remain relevant to the rapidly changing world.

This plan is built around the four pillars arrived at by 24 of our members at the Kickstart meeting 2018 which are;
  1. Being Connected
  2. Be Progressive
  3. Be Networked
  4. Be a Catalyst  ”
Neville then had much pleasure in introducing the incoming Board to all present.

Winding up, Neville reminded us that with he being a career Copper and Suzette a career Lawyer we can expect things will be more ‘black and white’, ………. as he and Suzette donned their Collingwood AFL scarfs.
