Russell Rolls

A Tale of Two Engineers

In 1884 Henry Royce started an electrical and mechanical business. He made his first car, a two-cylinder Royce 10, in his Manchester factory in 1904. He was introduced to Charles Rolls at the Midland Hotel, Manchester on 4 May of that year. Rolls was proprietor of an early motor car dealership, C.S.Rolls & Co. In Fulham.

In spite of his preference for three or four cylinder cars, Rolls was impressed with the Royce 10 and in a subsequent agreement of 23 December 1904 agreed to take all the cars Royce could make. There would be four models:

 a 10 hp (7.5 kW), two-cylinder model selling at £395 (£40,000 in 2014),
  •  a 15 hp (11 kW) three-cylinder at £500 (£50,000 in 2014),
  • a 20 hp (15 kW) four-cylinder at £650 (£60,000 in 2014),
  •  a 30 hp (22 kW) six-cylinder model priced at £890 (£80,000 in 2014),

All would be badged as Rolls-Royce, and be sold exclusively by Rolls. The first Rolls-Royce car, the Rolls-Royce 10 hp, was unveiled at the Paris Salon in December 1904.

Russell is a long-time Rolls-Royce owner and member of the major international clubs catering for the marque. He is currently the Chairman of The Sir Henry Royce Foundation, a charitable foundation that seeks to preserve and promulgate the technical ideals of Sir Henry Royce.

Russell is an acknowledged expert on the history of Rolls-Royce motor cars.

Glow for the Greater Good
Ever heard of Hampton Rotary Club? Probably not. It’s not in District 9800, it’s in District 9810 on the dark side of South Road, a few metres south of our own Brighton Beach RC.
The Hampton club of 30-35 members (half of them females) has used its nous and come up with a stupendous project for Saturday April 18, connecting the club with thousands of local citizens, schools, community groups and a range of Rotary Clubs across the Bayside Victoria area.

The project is “GLOW for Good – Bayside World Challenge 2015”. The challenge is to break the Guinness World Record for the number of glow sticks lit up simultaneously. The current record is 836 set in Los Angeles in 2013.
Jo Kwok of Hampton RC hopes for a glow-stick crowd of close to 2000 by sunset. The event will be an extension of Hampton Rotary’s Bayside Farmers Market at Sandringham’s Trey Bit Reserve, with food stalls, entertainment including bouncy castles, and petting zoos for kids plus aerobatics from a World War 2 fighter plane from 4pm in the afternoon.
Inspired by Rotary’s 110th birthday and this year’s Light Up Rotary theme, this unique event is expected to be high profile, and get a lot of media coverage.

Are you interested in future club leadership (not necessarily as club president) or are you just keen to learn more about Rotary?

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district leadership development program and offers a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organisations.

Sessions are fun, fast paced, interactive one day courses run by experienced and formally trained Rotarians in our District. The participants contribute their experience and ideas in facilitated conversational small discussion groups, sharing knowledge, ideas and opinions. They learn how Rotary operates differently in clubs and learn from these differences. It builds confidence in a Rotarian. RLI gives a perspective about where Rotary has been, where it is going, and a vision of what Rotary can be.

The program consists of 3 full day sessions, which run from 9am to 3.15pm on Sundays in South Melbourne.

Register your interest NOW, with Roger or Roy, for Part 1 on March 22.

This week’s meeting was one where we were visited by the GSE team from the USA but also one where a lot of business was done.

In an extended series of announcements:
  • Koren Harvey asked members to consider the possibility of hosting an in-bound Exchange student, possibly in conjunction with another club.
  • Frank O’Brien announced a working bee at the Donations in Kind Store in West Footscray on the morning of Saturday April 11th.
  • PP Bernie Gerlinger advised the club that there will be a working bee at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre on April 18th.  This will form part of “Rotary at Work Day”.
  • PP Kevin Walklate reminded members that the club’s visit to Camp Getaway at Axedale to do work there is scheduled for the first weekend in May.
  • PE George Mackey invited those interested to attend the next fundraising lunch at TarraWarra on the 24th of March. The theme of the day will be “Big Reds”.
  • George also called for volunteers to help with hosting MUNA ( Model United Nations Assembly) from the 29th to the 31st of May.
  • David Jones will be stepping down as Bulletin Editor at the end of the Rotary year and asked for members to consider taking on the job. Tony Thomas congratulated David on a job well done.
  • President Roy advised the club that former member Brian Downey was undergoing some surgery and would be in Cabrini Hospital for a week.  Richard Mitchell in his role as Almoner will pass on the club’s best wishes.
  • Roy also announced that Peter Frueh from the RC of Balwyn had been selected to follow Neville John as District Governor Nominee.

David Jones, Director of Vocational presented his directors report.  He thanked the members of his committee and other members for hosting the GSE team and putting together the vocational visits that were such a success. He then introduced the GSE team.

The Group Study Exchange team comes from District 6840 which serves southeast Louisiana, including New Orleans and the Mississippi and the Gulf Coast.  Team Leader Carl Michel and team members Alex Michael, Kait Sukiennik, Chris Vignes and Matthew Winterkorn spoke of their backgrounds, their current vocations and the experiences they have had on the visit so far.

They said that the vocational visits organized by RCCMS and the weekend trip to Queenscliff, Lorne and the Great Ocean Road had been highlights of their trip.

Carl, the team leader is already very active in Rotary, being an Assistant Governor and Conference Chair for next year.  The other team members have had their interest sparked in Rotary and are planning to get more involved on their return.
