NEXT MEETING (virtual) - TUESDAY  27th October

Dr Kitty O'Connor: End Polio Campaign

The World Health Organization (WHO) on 25 August announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region. This is a historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary’s top priority. After decades of hard won gains in the region, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative — WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the vaccine alliance — are proclaiming the milestone an achievement in public health. They offer it as proof that strong commitment, coordination, and perseverance can rid the world of polio.

Dr Catherine (Kitty) O’Connor is a Doctor of Law from Oxford University. Having practised as a solicitor in the UK for a number years, Kitty retired from active case work in 2002 upon her arrival into Australia (Melbourne). An avid Sydney Swans supporter, she is currently the in-house counsel at Healthcare Australia. The mother to three Great Danes, Kitty originally joined Rotary in 2009 as part of the Honiara Rotary Club in the Solomon Islands where she was living. She returned to Australia and her beloved Albert Park in 2011 and left the Rotary fold only to rejoin in 2016.

President of the Laverton Point Cook Rotary Club for two years from 2018, Kitty took on the role District 9800 Polio Chair in 2019. Now a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne South, a two-time cancer survivor, Kitty supports her most passionate causes as a speaker for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Fight Cancer Foundation, Equality and Diversity and of course Polio.

There were a number of guest:
•    Susan Barton and Marg Leser from Melbourne Rotary
•    Bernard Marchingo (for the last time as he was to be inducted at today’s meeting), Dr Marli Watt, Gihan, Karli Allen. Gail Cameron
Our own Francesco Fedele spoke on our Rotary Mentoring program using a powerpoint, referring to it as the road map for future mentoring and the Rotary Mentoring Academy. It had become a community of practice across Victorian Districts and further afield. Mentoring is about investing time in others so others may grow and so will you. Francesco referred to the mentoring three way connection: Self discovery; Ability to listen and Spirit of generosity.
It is now well recognised as part of leadership development for Victoria Police, (since 2007); Ambulance Victoria and soon to be State Emergency Service. It has involved 300 mentees and 230 Rotary mentors and is a real reflection of ‘Service above self’, with a clear goal around community involvement.  It is not about telling – but making a comment and leaving it at that.
Part of the success of the program has been around our focus is on leadership development and profile pairing together with it being goal based with a structured mentoring agreement. There is now a strong Alumni and community of practice and is a great way for Rotary members to leave a legacy. Nev II also highlighted the International Student Mentoring program which is gathering momentum and has been very successful this year.
A very moving statement by Induct Bernard Marchingo was inducted and responded with a very moving and heart felt response which was acknowledged by Club Members. Great to have Bernard as a member of the Club.

David Laurie advised that MUNA registrations were being sought and that MUNA was planned for 5-6 December and would be a virtual event this year.
At this point Stuart needed to depart the meeting to face Senate Estimates.  Fortunately, he had not given any Cartier watches to staff members, so he came through unscathed.

Yes, it has indeed been a challenging year for everyone.  I am juggling studying my last two subjects with full time work and some home schooling, so very busy at the moment.
It has been a wonderful few years doing the Grad Dip; especially with the fantastic educators at Melbourne.  I have learnt so much and am more confident in the youth space at work.  One of the great benefits is doing the course with people from so many different backgrounds and job types.  This year we have been joined by quite a few overseas students and their input and perspective is illuminating.
I can’t thank the wonderful members of Rotary Melbourne enough for the fabulous opportunity I have been given and hope to continue doing good community work into the future.  Under less trying times, I hope that Rotary can continue to offer support in whichever capacity they are able.  It is definitely appreciated by all who broadly benefit from it.

RCM Trivia Night

 Don’t Trivialise Trivia Nights
Another majestic RCM Trivia Night was accomplished last Thursday with questions devised by the Southern Hemisphere’s Trivia Queen Anne King. The roll-up was RCM 6, Bearbrass Probus 3, Sunrise Probus 4, and WAGs 2 (wives and girlfriends), showing again the benefits of cross-club cooperation.
Anne’s questions were testing and imaginative. On her section about past-era TV shows and actors, about the only one many of us got right was that Abigail starred in the indecent series No 96, which suggests the lowest-common-denominator mindset of participants. We did learn a few useful things such as that a cockroach baby is called a “nymph”, as in (spouse to spouse), “You left the ravioli packet open in the pantry and now it’s full of nymphs!”
The quiz was won for the first time by the Tony and Margaret Thomas duo, scoring 18.5 out of 49.5, ahead of runner-up Kevin Love on 18. Tony won the coveted prize of Tony’s latest book “Come to think of it – essays to tickle the brain.” Tony thanked Tony for his generosity.
Rob Hines with some poking and prodding agreed to run the next Trivia Night at 5.30pm on Thursday Dec. 5.  We intend petitioning club leaders to make this night obligatory, which would result in a satisfactory roll-up of 240 participants rather 15 (which includes counting Tony in two
