Bill Layton: The making of the Twin Gorges Walk in Fitzroy Crossing, Fitzroy Valley, Kimberley, Western Australia

Bill is an engineer [almost retired] and has spent most of his working life in mining projects in regional and remote Australia, including north west Western Australia. About 7 years ago, Bill was introduced to a remarkable aboriginal woman, June Oscar AO, and her friends Pat Davies [country singer] and Emily Carter. They have become Bill's great friends and his trips to the Fitzroy Valley area have become longer and more frequent. This year Bill spent 2 months in Fitzroy Crossing mapping out this walking trail and undertaking a pro-bono building project.

The walking trail project is being carried out to create a sustainable enterprise for a local aboriginal native title holder group-the Bunuba People.

The walk covers two 400 million year old gorge systems and part of the biggest river in eth Kimberley [in Australia when flowing]-the Fitzroy River. The walk covers some rugged and remarkably beautiful country and includes some amazing rock art, amazing bird life and bush. It will be guided by the Bunuba Rangers Group and will be vehicle assisted to suit patrons' walking ability. Ultimately it will be part of an eco-tourism venture based in Fitzroy Crossing and employing mainly aboriginal people.
[Photo of Bill discussing the proposed walk with Rob Hines, Greg Cuthbert and Allan Driver on the recent Fizroy Crossing trip]
There are many challenges ahead including government approvals, station owner approvals, clan group issues, finance and training. This is an exciting venture and has great support from all who have been involved to date. It is still a big challenge to convert this idea into reality. [Refer to Promotion Brochure below]

Bill has developed a love for this country and its people. Apart from its amazing natural beauty, it is still a frontier and has all the excitement and freedom that would be regarded as frontier country.

Last night members, spouses and partners were treated to a Change-Over dinner that foretells more than just a change of office bearers is in store for the next 12 months.

Incoming District Governor Julie Mason and Assistant Governor [Batman Cluster] Ian Salek joined us for the celebration, which included a most enjoyable musical interlude by pianist Peter Sullivan.

The Melbourne Savage Club was the venue. [see separate item below]

In his review of the past 12 months President Roy said;
"Let me say at the outset that I started the year with my normal mix of cynicism, apprehension at too much process, the strong belief that good people will always do good things AND that good people are the backbone of Rotary. I haven’t really changed. We have a club full of good people – people who work hard and unselfishly, people who put in, people who are connected, who are trained and who are intelligent. So how can we lose?
To be president of this club is mostly about letting all these clever, motivated, good people get on with it. And they did – the membership as a whole and particularly the board and the chairs of the various committees.
So my main purpose is to say thank you to them one and all………...”  MORE

A full copy of Roy’s review heads up the excellent annual report produced by Marjorie – electronic form available on request to the Secretary.

New president George gave examples of his well considered strategic plan to place the club on a more output orientated business footing  - a small example, 'committees'  will be replaced by 'project teams'.  Watch that space.

Established in 1894, the Melbourne Savage Club is one of Australia’s oldest and most atmospheric private members clubs.

The clubhouse is an historic 19th century mansion right in the heart of Melbourne.

The club’s name reflects the desire of the founders to encourage a flowering of Bohemian tradition, like the London Savage Club, by taking the name of Richard Savage, a free-spirited 17th century English poet.

These origins are expressed today through club members who engage in a broad range of interests across the arts, literature, science and sport.

A diverse mix of academics and artists, lawyers and judges, businessmen and journalists is to be found behind the clubhouse’s scarlet doors, enjoying one another’s company amid classic décor and furnishings, fine art and exotic artefacts.

This abridged note from Tony Thomas may be of interest to the organ enthusiasts in our club community.

“……Curator David Steed invited Tony to put the museum's rare and priceless keyboards through their paces.  Tony obliged with a Handel fugue and pronounced the instruments to be in good shape. The museum has 70 instruments of which 30 are playable.”

For Tony skeptics -Editor notes that while Tony may be our club shorthand expert  his skills do not stretch to playing the organ.  However the Finchcock Museum allows anyone to sit at several of their collection, and since it is Tony's 75th birthday today we will indulge him!
