WELCOME LYNNE!

Our newest member Lynne Webber was formally inducted this week by President in the presence of AG Kate Strain. Lynne is in good hands with mentor Kevin Love.

Lynne was introduced to the club by Theresa and is a Principal practice leader with the Department of Health and Human Services. Lynne is originally from Sydney and has now spent about 18 years in Melbourne and also lived in the US for some time. To borrow a phrase from the great A.B Facey she has lived a fortunate life, a large part of her role now is to work with vulnerable people with disabilities whose emotions can manifest via their behaviour. Lynne’s role serves to protect the human rights of these people with keys outcomes to reduce the amount of sedation and restraints used.

We warmly welcome Lynne to RCM and look forward to being a part of her Rotary journey.

NEXT MEETING

Shakira Tsindos (left) and Raphael Wong (right)

Mezzo soprano Shakira Tsindos holds a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

In 2016, Shakira was the proud recipient of the Joseph Sambrook Opera Scholarship with the esteemed Melba Opera Trust and held a position in Victorian Opera’s Developing Artist program.  Shakira most recently made her European debut with the Mediterranean Opera Festival (Sicily) in the role of Dorabella from Mozart’s COSÌ FAN TUTTE.

For three years, Shakira held a scholarship with Opera Scholars Australia (OSA) including the inaugural Peter Evans Scholarship in 2015. Performance highlights for OSA include the title role in SNOW WHITE AND OTHER GRIMM TALES, Carmen in CARMEN in the Caves and performances at Opera in the Alps and Opera in the Market as a finalist for the Opera Scholar of the Year competition.

2017 saw Shakira win the Acclaim Awards Italy Opera Fellowship, which will see her undertake a study tour of Italy in 2018.

Since completing his Bachelor of Music under Full Merit Scholarship at the University of Melbourne, Raphael has worked on stage and in concert with companies across Australia, the USA and China in both opera and music theatre.

A two-time finalist for the Herald Sun Aria Competition, Raphael was also runner up in the National Liederfest Competition, and a finalist in the Welsh Male Choir Singer of the Year Competition. He also received a Green Room Nomination Association for his role as the Musiklehrer in Citi Opera’s Ariadne auf Naxos.

Raphael is the recipient of the 2017 Acclaim Awards Italy Opera Fellowship, which will see him undertake a study tour of Italy in 2018.

GUEST SPEAKER PRESENATION - LAST TUESDAY

Senior Sergeant Jackie Urquhart

My Journey with Victoria Police

Jackie is a current mentee in the Police Mentoring program with Theresa as her mentor.

Jackie hails from Phillip Island and joined the Victorian Police Force in 2005 after time at university and in a corporate environment in an Organisational Development and Learning role. After initial duties at the Malvern Police Station and undertaking a number of temporary assignments, Jackie successfully completed Prosecutors Training Course 80. In 2010 Jackie obtained a position at Melbourne Prosecutions then in 2012 commenced duties at the Research and Training Unit (RTU). In 2013 Jackie was promoted to Sergeant at the Operations Response Unit (ORU).  Jackie enjoyed the challenge in an area outside of her comfort zone and gained exposure in a variety of roles to large scale events such as bushfire emergencies, riots and demonstrations.

In 2016 Jackie was promoted to Manager of the South East Prosecutions Region (Morwell, Bairnsdale and Sale Prosecutions Units) which meant a return to the Prosecutions Division as a Senior Sergeant.  More recently, Jackie has been transferred to the Melbourne Prosecutions Unit where she is responsible for ensuring a professional prosecutions service is delivered. The mission of Prosecutions Division is to provide an independent and professional prosecutions service to the community of Victoria by supporting judicial and coronial proceedings on behalf of Victoria Police

Victoria Police prosecutors handle approximately 300,000 cases every year including summary contested hearings, case conferences and contest mentions.  In addition to criminal matters, we deal with significant numbers of other applications such as: intervention order applications, bail and remand applications, adjournments, CME, interstate extraditions, firearms act applications, forfeiture, restitution and comp orders, DNA and fingerprint orders and retention applications, driver licence restoration and alcohol interlock apps, sex offender registrations, exclusion orders.
