“Five Myth about transition to retirement”
Meryl Karlson, RetroActive
Meryl Karlson has undertaken Post Graduate study in Social Ecology (see note below) and is with RetroActive: The Aging Revolution. She spoke about transitioning into Positive Aging and the 5 myths of aging. These myths erode our piece of mind. Meryl promotes five strategies for Active Aging and tools to support the transition to next phase of life. She believes people seek the experience of being alive.
Meryl busted five transition into retirement myths for us:
- Myth 1 Aging means declining cognitive and physical ability. Busted: aging is not a disease, its an opportunity.
- Myth 2: Work free retirement. Busted: more likely to remain employed, change roles, become an entrepreneur or business coach in retirement.
- Myth 3 Sedentary, sexless and submissive. Busted: physical health improves with time to pursue passions.
- Myth 4 Can’t teach old dogs new tricks. Busted: perfect time to learn new skills on the bucket list.
- Myth 5 Won’t be an inheritance as Baby Boomers will spend it. Busted we leave a legacy in other ways.
Note: being an Engineer, John googled the meaning of Social Ecology and now feels much more informed:
“Social Ecology is a critical social theory founded by American anarchist and libertarian socialist author Murray Bookchin. Conceptualised as a critique of current social, political, and anti-ecological trends, it espouses a reconstructive, ecological, communitarian, and ethical approach to society.”
