Leigh Clifford, AO is one of Australia’s most talented and experienced senior executives and directors. He is currently Chairman of Qantas Airways Ltd, a role he has held since 2007. He is also a Director of Bechtel Group Inc. and Chairman of Bechtel Australia Pty Ltd, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the National Gallery of Victoria Foundation. He is a senior adviser to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co and a Member of the Council of Trustees of the National Gallery of Victoria.
Between 2000 and 2007, Mr Clifford was Chief Executive of Rio Rinto. His executive and board career with Rio Tinto spanned 37 years throughout many of the company’s divisions in Australia and overseas.
The Rotary Club of Central Melbourne - Sunrise is pleased to invite you and your colleagues to hear Mr Leigh Clifford when he speaks at our Club’s inaugural Business Leaders Breakfast on Tuesday 3 March 2015. His talk will provide an interesting overview of the current business environment from a high profile Chairman and Director.
Next week our club will be hosting the Group Study Exchange visitors from District 6840, Louisiana USA.
The five visitors will be billeted by five of our members for six days, which include a range of several vocational visits for the inbound team and social time over the long weekend. The Vocational Committee members have each coordinated arranging the vocational visits with considerable assistance from other members' and their contacts in the city.
To meet some of the wishes of the team members to experience other parts of Victoria we expect some of the weekend time will be away from Melbourne.
Our visitors arrive next Wednesday afternoon, 4th March, following their time in Bendigo. After being with our club the team will travel to Hobart to attend the District Conference.
Members of our club will have an opportunity to meet and talk with the team at our regular club meeting on Tuesday 10th March.
Tibetan Village Project Australia Inc. (TVPA) is a not for profit, non political, non religious organization established almost a decade ago by Don Cullen after he had travelled to Tibet enjoying high altitude trekking and working with local Tibetans.
Don felt he could help the local people to show their dignity and under the banner of TVPA set out helping to establish medical clinics, an orphanage, educational facilities and green houses. It soon became apparent that by helping the Tibetans help themselves, a number of these projects, in a very short period of time became self sufficient.
Don Cullen of Black Rock, Melbourne, and a member of the Rotary Club of Brighton North, started the organisation after visiting the country numerous times over the years and has spent the past ten years working on the program full time.
His program was among the recipients of aid from the $114,000 raised in total by the open-garden weekend Garden DesignFest last November.
A further short story from new club, Rotary Club of Crawley, WA.
Abdullahi Alim, 22, a member of Perth’s Rotary of Crawley (RoC), arrived from Somalia when he was 5, with zero English. He’s come a long way since – last year he was in Los Angeles helping to run an international youth leadership program.
“My job was to coach seven college-aged kids through a series of workshops on goal-setting, time-management and standard leadership topics. There were great speakers – top celebrities, motivators and the pop stars the kids idealised.”
“I was with two other coaches of my age from Rotary of Crawley. UWA sent us there and a club sponsor paid the flights.”
Alim’s been with the club since he was 19, and is inspired by projects including RoC’s partnership with Lockridge High School. “Many kids there are from backgrounds where important aspects of family life are missing,” he says. “I also like introducing speakers at club meetings.”
Editor apologises the regular written meeting report is not available this week. However we can retrieve a pictorial record of the meeting.
