The Ebola virus disease outbreak in Africa – implications for Victoria

Ebolavirus disease (Ebola) is an infectious and severe illness that is marked by fever and severe internal bleeding. The virus spreads through direct contact with contaminated bodily fluids and can be transmitted from animals to people.

The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa is larger and more serious than any previous outbreak and has developed into a humanitarian crisis, with 20,206 cases acquired in West Africa as of 31 December 2014 and almost 8,000 deaths. The reported number of deaths is likely to be an underestimate of the true number of cases that are fatal, due to the delay between onset and outcome, and a lack of follow-up of the outcome.

Dr Rosemary Lester is the Chief Health Officer at the Department of Health, Victoria. She is a medical graduate of the University of Melbourne, has a Master of Public Health from Monash University and a Master of Science (Epidemiology) from the University of California Los Angeles. She is a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, and has worked in the Department since 1989.

Rosemary has worked predominantly in Immunisation and Communicable Disease Prevention and Control. She is Victoria’s representative on the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, and a member of the National Health and Medical Research Council and was awarded the Public Service Medal in the Australia Day Honours in January 2014.

Message sent by President Roy 29th January is repeated here.

"I regret to report that Past President, fellow member and friend, Lou Butterfield died earlier this evening.

I received phone call from John Meehan with the news about a hour ago.  John advised that he will contact members with a particular connection to Lou.  He also volunteered to prepare an article for the bulletin.

Richard Mitchell is also looking after an obituary notice and further notifications.

Newer members may not have met Lou but members of only a few years will have.
Lou has the distinction of having met his wife Pat, also a member at the time, at our club.  Annie and I had the pleasure of taking the Butterfield's to Viet Nam and Cambodia six or eight years ago on a sort of honeymoon trip.  We are so glad we were able to add a great experience to their later lives.

I do not have any funeral info at this stage but will pass it on when available.

Roy Garrett
President"

Many members missed the guest speaker Jeremy Scott last Tuesday.  Those at the meeting have spoken exceptionally highly of the presentation and the quality of the photographs – from Jeremy’s book.

BBQ

The second annual barbecue at the Meehan’s at Mt Martha on Sunday January 18 was a delightful day, even for the Meehan’s.
This was because the 41 visitors threw their weight into preparation and then the washing and packing up. “By 4pm we could hardly tell anyone had been here,” Lorraine says.
John and Lorraine hosted the barbecue to stay in touch with Rotary friends from the past quarter-century, and to meet newcomers.  At their former holiday home on a big block at Mt Martha they hosted several similar barbecues before moving to the Mt Martha coast over two years ago as permanent residents.
The day began with a rain sprinkle but skies were perfect by noon.

John and Lorraine provided the five tender rump slabs plus snags and Roger Thornton and Pippa Thornton did much of the preparation. The following visitors provided massive quantities of green and fruit salads: Annie Garrett, Yanpu, Marjorie Gerlinger, Rebecca John, Margaret Thomas, Pauline O’Brien and Pippa Thornton. Other members were also very active on washing up duties.

A small but lively gathering joined Chairperson Neil Salvano in a toast to R.I. plus Australia.

President Roy welcomed our guest speaker Jeremy Scott and visiting Rotarian George Mills from Port Macquarie.

George gave us an illustrated and entertaining report of his visit representing us, as our sister Club in Japan celebrated their first anniversary since combining with the Rotary Club of Midosuji. Four other Rotary clubs, 1 from Korea, 2 from Taipai and 1 from Hong Kong also visited the Rotary Club of Osaka Midosji Hommachi for their lavish dinner at the Intercontinental Hotel. Apart from formalities, magnificent food and copious amounts of 56% proof rice wine, the night included a wealth of entertainment, from jazz to a string quartet, young cheerleaders , and singing from some impressively talented members of the Club. George delivered a Japanese translation of President Roy’s speech on the night; well received, though the pronunciation produced a few laughs. The amalgamation has produced a strong club with 53 members. They are hoping for more visits from us, especially when they celebrate their 5 anniversary. Thanks go to George Mills for representing us so effectively.

Guest Speaker JEREMY SCOTT
Chairperson Neil introduced New Zealander Jeremy who told a remarkable personal tale of transformation from illness to conquering the globe on a bike. Jeremy’s mother detected a serious heart problem when he was 18 months old. Surgery, delayed until he was 4 , was highly successful. Many years later while working as an architectural draughtsman in Britain he read several stories of inspiring  bike rides. He spent 7 years planning his own 52,000 km bike ride home. Much of that effort involved obtaining visas.
In the first ten weeks heading for Istanbul he mastered “wild camping” ,mechanical issues and fear of riding alone. In Turkey he experienced temperatures of -40 degrees, biting winds, icy roads and frostbite of face, fingers and toes. Iran was his favourite country with stunning architecture and the humbling generosity of the people. Here  he survived a run in with local mafia. Kirgigstan, 94% beautiful snow covered mountains, was another of the many challenges he faced, before descending into blinding sandstorms in Western China. At times he covered 200 km per day, on others he was reduced to 70km in 10 hours of riding. Surprisingly he sustained only 7 punctures in the whole trip. Wild bears in Japan gave him several sleepless nights.
