"Future Ready, by Design”
Maureen Thurston, Global Director, Design to Innovate at Aurecon
Maureen gave insights in how to create environments in business where people converge, vital in a low-growth milieu. She urged constructive ‘why’ questions.
For example, if a client wants you to build a river bridge, a good ‘why’ question is “Why is there a need to cross the river?” Acting as a ‘thinking partner’ may generate different solutions, instead of billions being spent sub-optimally. Even if asking why results in the loss of a bridge-building contract, she said sound advice would likely mean that client would return for future projects.
Her mnemonic was:
- What is?: What is the as-it state that we are in and why are seeking this solution to it
- What if?: What is an alternative desired state and how would we get there
- What wows?: What is the value proposition in this approach for the customer
- What works?: How do we deliver this value proposition to the client (Note: if what works is done in isolation this will result in the bridge being built)
Maureen left us with food for thought, “There are two ways of being creative in song and dance – sing and dance yourself or create an environment in which singers and dancers flourish.”
