Mark Cochrane-Holley: Invest Melbourne Post Covid Pandemic
The City of Melbourne is making strategic choices in its policies for the future. Invest Melbourne approaches this from a business perspective and seeks potential opportunities for new investments. What can we expect, and what could this mean for the city's liveability and the wellbeing of its residents? How can non governmental organisations like Rotary contribute to supporting this?
Mark’s presentation will focus on the city’s response to the Covid pandemic and the work being undertaken to strengthen the city’s economy, ensuring long-term economic growth, social cohesion and environmental resilience.
Mark Cochrane-Holley is the Director, Invest Melbourne at the City of Melbourne. Invest Melbourne is the investment attraction and facilitation arm of council, whose work is dedicated to attracting and supporting new businesses to open and positioning Melbourne as the best place to run a business.

Rotary Central Melbourne is looking to build a partnership with St Mary’s House of Welcome, beginning with a barbeque staffed by RCM volunteers on Friday, 4 October. The BBQ is expected to serve 150 meals.
SMHOW is operated by the Daughters of Charity and commenced in 1960 as a soup kitchen, catering for inner city homeless people. Within a year of opening, the organisation was serving 250 lunches each day. SMHOW now provides services to people who are disadvantaged through homelessness, poverty, childhood trauma and mental illness. Services include meals, showers, specialist referrals, laundry, mail collection and computer access. Most importantly, it provides a safe, warm place where clients feel as though they belong.
While social housing is very tight at the moment, staff continue trying to place clients.
Funding for operations comes form government (40%) as well as philanthropy. In financial year 2023, services included 40,000 meals, 2,600 showers, 360 sleeping essentials, and 150 social inclusion activities.
SMHOW operates five days per week, but is now trying to fund additional operations for Saturdays and hopefully Sundays. Further information about SMHOW can be found at the following. https://www.smhow.org.au/ https://www.facebook.com/smhow Instagram, X and LinkedIn.
Kristine and Karen presented an interesting oversight on a valuable social service in Melbourne. It is heartening to see the support for SMHOW through our Community Service Committee.
President Rhys said that the Magic of Rotary is about transforming lives and SMHOW is a marvellous example of dedicated people providing a sense of belonging to those in need. Rotary Central Melbourne is looking at ways to continue the partnership with St Mary’s House of Welcome.
World Polio Day is 24 October. This is a time for Rotary members, public health advocates, and all who want a world free of polio to come together, recognise our progress in the fight to end polio, and talk about the actions we need to take in order to end polio for good. Not sure how you can support? Why not support our very own Polio Plus Society Member, Rohan Williams, who is participating in the 2024 Walk With Us in October. You can donate at - https://www.rotarywalkwithus.org/fundraisers/rohanwilliams

At least 2 things happened today in the continuing life of Rotary Central Melbourne, as organised by our Community Services Committee.
Firstly, we donated $1000 to SMHOW at 165 – 169 Brunswick St Fitzroy. You can find out more about SMHOW by reading last Meeting’s Guest Speakers’ stories elsewhere in this Club Bulletin and SMHOW’s many programmes which support the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community – people sleeping rough, those experiencing chronic homelessness and disadvantage.
Secondly, as part of partnering with SMHOW, 11 representatives of RCM today had the privilege in delightful sunshine of preparing and serving a lunchtime BBQ of sausages ,hamburgers, various salads and coleslaw plus fruit salad and other delicious desserts for more than 100 grateful homeless and vulnerable Melburnians.
Our Club volunteers were Roy Garrett, Herb & Leonie Greenwood, Neville & Rebecca John, David & Sally Jones, Frank & Pauline O’Brien, Alan Seale & Roger Thornton. It was 4 hours filled with fun, understanding, compassion, sympathy and care.....and lots of Country Music, courtesy of Chief Chef Ryan!!!
Our thanks to SMHOW’s CEO Robina Bradley and Stakeholder Engagement Officer Karen Quist for arranging and instructing, plus tremendous support from Chefs Ryan and Glenn, our key overseers for the day as well as James O’Farrell , who was always there to lend a hand.
Well done everybody. It was indeed a pleasure to be there....and thankyou.

Join us for what promises to be an inspiring morning and be part of a key fundraising event for The Rotary Foundation which supports Rotary projects domestically and internationally.
Rotary is a Founding Partner of the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), and every year Rotarians join our Program as volunteers to support the Program.
The NYSF is seeking interest from volunteers who would like to share their time with the staff and students during the NYSF Year 12 Program in January 2025.
Volunteers with the NYSF derive a great sense of fulfilment and satisfaction from their work and NYSF is certainly very much enhanced by their generous efforts. You will get to meet and spend time with the next generation of STEM experts while visiting some of Australia's most cutting-edge STEM facilities.
Every January six to eight Rotary volunteers spend their time with us committing to:
Supporting the NYSF Staff and our Student Staff volunteers by being part of the supervisory team, and
Providing pastoral care and first aid to the students.
The Program runs between the dates detailed below. These dates include arriving one day before the session commences and staying until at least the final day of the program. You are welcome to leave on the same day as the students.
Canberra 5-14th January 2025
Brisbane 14-23rd January 2025
You can read a position description for this volunteer role by clicking on this link.

This community day is in support of mental health, with funds raised going to three mental health support agencies, one of which is the Trauma Recovery Network Australia. Enter yourself or a team to play with large rackets with modified table tennis rules. BBQ and non-alcoholic drinks will be available to purchase.
