GUEST SPEAKER PRESENTATION 12th JUNE - REPORT

Shane Scanlan - Director Hyperlocal News

"Defying gravity with hyper-local print publications"

Shane Scanlon of the Docklands News talked of the success of this very locally focused newspaper that he and a small team produce weekly doing everything except the actual printing themselves.

They have three mastheads, Docklands News, Southbank News and the CBD News and concentrate on local affairs and events. Their online presence is a minor part of their business.

They are very independent editorially unafraid of tackling local issues such as the Queen Victoria Market redevelopment and are happy to receive content from local organisations and clubs. Distribution is done via various channels to reach apartment dwellers, cafés and city offices.

Shane believes the local content is key to their survival and in that respect, they have no competition.

BUNNINGS BBQs

Peter and Sue Duras have been the driving force behind a series of Bunnings' BBQs during the past year, which have raised just over $9,000 to support our club's activities and provided opportunities to explain the service activities that Rotary and our club are involved in.

As a result of Peter's ability to organize the key ingredients (i.e. bread, sausages, onions, sauce, serviettes, drinks and volunteers) at short notice, Bunnings Port Melbourne and Bunnings Collingwood have offered us far more opportunities than were previously envisaged.

During the recent BBQ at Bunnings Collingwood, Sue and Peter were able to serve some very enthusiastic customers.

Well done to Peter and Sue and every member who has supported this activity!
