NEXT MEETING, TUESDAY 5th JULY 2016

GUEST SPEAKER;

LIBBY HILL, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of the VICTORIAN OPERA

"Victorian Opera - The Next Decade"

In just ten years, over 300,000 audience members have experienced a performance with Victorian Opera – over 20,000 of those attending regional performances.  During its short history, VO have created 14 new Australian works and collaborated with some of Australia’s leading companies, venues and learning institutions.

Elizabeth trained as a classical dancer, performing with the West Australian Ballet for ten years before moving into freelance choreography, working primarily with opera productions.  During this time, she developed an interest in the artistic management and administration of companies.
Following five years as a freelancer, Elizabeth took on the position of Assistant Head of Dance for the VCA’s Secondary School while also completing her Graduate Diploma in Arts Management at the University of Melbourne.

This led her to the role of Company Manager at Opera Australia, followed by Artistic Liaison Manager.  During her time with Opera Australia, Elizabeth was responsible for corporate events, tour management and resident choreography for the company.

In 2012, Elizabeth joined Victorian Opera as an Artistic Administrator before becoming the company’s Executive Producer in 2014.  She is responsible for the implementation of the artistic program.

GEORGE'S 'PRESIDENT'S REPORT':
I started the FY16 year with some sound advice ringing in my ears.
  • “Come on George – 80% of being a good President is just showing up (on time)”
  • “Only the RC Presidents think that they run the Club (he! he! he!)”.
About a month into the role the penny finally dropped in respect to what I’d signed up for: I belatedly realised that I had not one, but three distinct roles to play:
  1. The primary role was that of President of a suburban Rotary Club focused on humanitarian service. To a large extent Alan’s advice was quite correct – for the traditional projects and relationships the Club runs itself. These are the activities that we do best. This was not a surprise.
  2. The second role was the leadership of an organisation that had been experiencing material demographic and financial challenges for some years. The ability to fund and staff many of our signature activities has been contracting. Our membership is declining. The average age of a member of Rotary Central Melbourne is on the wrong side of 60, and trending up. And the demographic of our Rotary Club is misaligned with the community within which we operate. We are, never-the-less, still a strong club. This also was not a surprise.
  3. The third role that materialised was that of a tactical member of a Global service organisation. This manifested itself in an absolute avalanche of email from RI, District 9800, Batman Cluster, other RCs (both domestic and international), and all manner of outside individuals and external organisations seeking assistance. This came as a Repeated requests for the same information were the norm. It is unclear to me how ANY of this information was to be used. To give you some idea of the scale of what I’m talking about I received 2,962 emails from 1 July 2015 to 31 May 2016. This in not Club email – just general email from outside the Club. Of course Marjorie’s view was “tougher up buttercup”, or something similar! complete surprise.
