Making a Difference – RotariansAgainst Malaria (RAM)

Rotarians Against Malaria is a volunteer-run organization working to eliminate malaria. The primary focus of RAM has been the distribution of insecticide-treated nets to vulnerable populations in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and more recently, Timor Leste. RAM has raised more than $1.6 million to eliminate malaria since 2003. RAM works in conjunction with the Ministry of Health authorities in each country and complements the work of other malaria organisations, most notably the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Bill Oakley has been a member for 22 years and Past President of the Rotary Club of North Balwyn. He has been heavily involved in the Club’s activities in the Solomon Islands for 15 years which cover a broad range of projects. Sanitation, improving food, and other more direct efforts in the fight against malaria, have been prominent. Bill is now in his 5th year as the D9800 District Coordinator for Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM).

Alan Crawford

"Birdwatching explained: Twitching, Birding, Gripping Off, Big Year, Dipping, Dudes, Lifers, Ticks and more"

Alan described his passion of bird watching which has from the age of 12 taken to him to many places around the world off the well-trodden tourist track. Along the way, he has seen very interesting birds and other animals including his fellow bird watchers, which may be classified as birders, twitchers, dudes and ornithologists. Alan mentioned that migratory birds are able to travel very long distances (e.g. Alaska to New Zealand) by modifying their physiology. Alan briefly described the role of BirdLife Australia in campaigning for protection of birds and their habitats. Alan concluded by commending Rotary for assisting with the Regent Honeyeater planting weekend and encouraged members to participate.
