NEXT MEETING - TUESDAY  18th February

"Fueling Australia"

Rohan Williams - Supply Manager, Viva Energy Australia

For most of us, our interaction with the oil industry is limited to purchasing petrol/diesel from one of the seven thousand service stations in Australia. In addition to supplying fuel for cars, the oil industry supplies 90+% of fuel for all modes of transport in Australia, including trucks, buses, planes, trains, boats, etc. How are transport fuels supplied?  How secure is their supply?  How is the demand for fuel changing?

Rohan has a Bachelor of Engineering (Chem Hons) from the University of Queensland and has worked in the oil industry for 34 years in Australia, the Netherlands and Singapore for Shell and Viva Energy Australia. He has worked in various roles in both manufacturing and supply chain.

Rohan is a member of our club and was introduced to Rotary when his daughter, Kate, attended the National Youth Science Forum in 2017.

Meeting Report February 11th

RCM Meeting February 11th, 2020

President Warwick Cavell opened the meeting and invited the chair of the day to kick off the meeting with a toast to rotary international.

The chair of the day Paul Fowler reminded members of Rotary’s 4-way test and invited members to toast Rotary International.

Gerard Hogan entertained the congregation with a poem from John O’Brien as the members enjoyed their breakfast.

Announcements:

Russell Rolls reminded members about a working bee at DIK on 22 Feb 2020.

Alan Seale presented New Generation Service Exchange a vocational exchange program for 1 month - 6 months that RCM have supported in the past. The program has had exchanges with Rotary Club of Herzogenaurach, Bavaria Germany. The club has supported opera artist to participate in the Bayreuth young artist festival in Germany. RCM has built a relationship with Melbourne opera and has sought nominations of young artist for the exchange program. RCM will be pursuing this program in the future.

President’s announcements:

Warwick thanked to Roy for organising the club bbq and fellowship.

Informed members that the Board meetings using zoom has been going well.

Informed members about the Bare brass core meeting.

Speaker of the day was our very own Herb Greenwood. Herb’s presentation was about Rugby in China and SARS.

Herb was traveling around China when SARS hit. And described to the members the war footing at which the Chinese government was dealing with the pandemic. Herb drew similarities with the Corona virus and China’s reaction to that.

Suggested preventative methods are:

Avoid crowds - people showing no symptoms can be infected.

Sterilise everything - virus can last for up to 24 hours.

Wash your hands with soap thoroughly – at least 10-20 seconds with soap.

Takeaways:

Things you can get vaccinated for- Measles, Mumps, Rubella.

Things you can’t vaccinate against- Lies, Ignorance and Paranoia.

It took 3 years (2002-2005) for WHO to contain SARS.

Raffle winners- Warwick, Roger, Rajesh

Warwick closed meeting and thanked everyone.

DIK Working Bee Feb 22
RCM supports the District 9800 Donations In Kind (DIK) activity.  Each Rotary year we organise a couple of working bee at the DIK premises.  The next working bee is on Saturday, February 22.  The details are:

Where : Store 39, 400 Somerville Road, West Footscray (Parking inside the complex, alongside Store)

When : From 8.45 am, finishing 12.30

Tasks : To be confirmed but normally repackaging of donated goods from Corporates and NFP's, goods destined for Containers for delivery to 3rd World countries. There is a worthwhile task for everyone who comes.

This is an ongoing activity of our International Committee and a really "feel good" activity of our Club. If you haven't been to DIK before, it is a massive hive of activity and a real eye opener as to Rotary at work for the local and International community.

I look forward to your attending. Please let me know if you can make it.  We need around 10 volunteers.
