MEETING REPORT 5th JULY 2016

Notices and advice:
  • Greg Cuthbert chaired the meeting and introduced his father Paul as guest.
  • Michael Lapina was present and we look forward to his induction next week.
  • Warwick Cavell received the annual Royce Abbey Award from Past President George.
  • Peter Duras told us of the receipt of many blankets from Woodend club and nearby country clubs for Youth Projects.  A wine and cheese ‘event’ is planned for Wednesday 3 August.  More detail to follow.
  • Kevin Love indicated a meeting of those involved in the District Conference 2017  and anyone who is lonely on Saturday morning will occur at the Kildonan Uniting Care Centre, 1 Gold Street, Collingwood from 10am to 12.00 on Saturday 9th July.  A separate notice has been circulated. All are welcome.
  • Justine advised that subscriptions are now due and are $330 (incl of GST); new membership has been reduced to $50 and breakfast meetings remain at $30. She also indicated that Rotary International had supported our Club name change and now it was reliant on the receipt of no objections when registering as an Incorporated association.

Guest Speaker:

Our Guest speaker was Libby Hill, the Victorian Opera’s Executive Producer.  She originally trained as a dancer but later discovered that just music and dancing ‘was a little bit boring’ and the inclusion of singing through opera was far more entertaining.

Victorian Opera is a small company with no specific home theatre. It receives $3.7m from the Victorian Government. It focuses on both sustaining its existing audience and encouraging new opera audiences and engaging with young people.

This is in part to shift the perception that opera is seen as elitist, but also to ensure Victoria Opera is vibrant and relevant to as many people as possible. This includes as well as formal opera, education officers visiting schools and conducting workshops; conducting the ‘Big Sing’, where 200 people came together for a great singing experience and visiting Tasmania to offer opera there where there is no state opera company.
