DIK – IT’S BACK & SO IS RCM
Saturday 2 April saw 8 members of RCM volunteering at DIK for the first time in 55 weeks...due to COVID restrictions.
DIK is one of the Jewels in the Crown of Rotary District 9800 and is well supported by a nucleus of Clubs (19 from our District including RCM) which contribute the bulk of the rent required to keep Shed 39 at 401 Somerville Road West Footscray alive and humming.
Like most social enterprises, it has had reduced financial support over the last 2 years but thankfully, it has had a generous and caring Landlord in the shape of the late Frank Hargreaves, the founder of Skilled Engineering Ltd, who provided much rent relief over this period. Despite lack of Containers, DIK is still shipping to needy countries and is constantly in need of volunteers.
Bob Glindeman, member of Rotary Melbourne and chief at DIK, had planned for us to perform 4 tasks:
- Fill a large skip with rubbish (mainly unwanted donations) which had built up and was taking up space within the warehouse.
- Fill another skip with scrap metal which would be onsold.
- Readjust the contents of a container awaiting collection for Africa, and
- Match a large number of crutches for further use by beneficiaries.
Mission accomplished and as usual, Bob G was very pleased with RCM’s contribution.
Thanks go to Ariik Ariik, Peter Duras, Paul Fowler, Roy Garrett, Rob Hines, Frank O’Brien, Rob Soros & Rhys Williams for their sterling work.
