Des O'Shanassy: Concept and evolution of the WynSpeak program

WynSpeak, a youth public speaking competition for secondary school students in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne, was established to provide students with an opportunity to practise and test their public speaking skills in front of live audiences. This is a joint project between Hoppers Crossing Apex and the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing. WynSpeak has also partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Altona City, Caroline Springs and Melton. Local Toastmasters Clubs provide support with adjudication.

Through this comprehensive program students develop a skill for life. Since the inauguration of WynSpeak over 1000 students have participated.

WynSpeak program was founded by Des through Rotary Hoppers Crossing in September 2021.

Des is also District 9800 Interact Chairman.  He is a Life Member of Apex, a Past President of Rotary Hoppers Crossing, a Royce Abbey Champion of Change Awardee, Past District 9800 Assistant Governor - Gateway West Cluster and a City of Wyndham Chirnside Award recipient.

Des is originally from Leongatha, is married to Irene and they have two daughters and four grandchildren.
