GUEST SPEAKER FOR 16 JULY 2024

Snr Sgt Ben Morris: Increasing road safety awareness within the Victorian basketball community

In 2023, Victoria tragically lost 295 lives on its roads. Alarmingly, young adults aged 16 to 24 make up a significant portion of these casualties. Despite basketball ranking among the top three sports played by Victorians in this age group, there's a noticeable absence of a road safety campaign associated with it.

I have been a member of Victoria Police for 28 years and worked across many different commands and locations. I am victim-focused and for the most part of the last 10 years, worked within the sex offences and child abuse investigations area. Now working in the Road Policing Command, the trauma aspect of road safety and the impact on community drives my enthusiasm to promote road safety messaging across the state.

I have two teenage sons, one currently learning to drive and the other a probationary driver, both of whom play basketball at association and representative level.

I am involved in my local community, driven by a passion to instil in my children the value of giving back to the community. Alongside my participation in multiple sporting committees, I took great pride in serving as the school council president for several years. I take great pleasure in collaborating closely with both local and state governments to secure grants in those areas. I founded a caravan manufacturing company in 2011, soon after extending to service and repair. The founding partners continue to run day-to-day operations in Lilydale, Victoria.

In my current capacity, I am regularly engaged with the Road Safety Partnership, which includes the Transport Accident Commission and believe I can leverage my networks, to pinpoint key road safety messaging that can be effectively disseminated across the Victorian basketball community.

Ben is participating in the 2024-25 VicPol Leadership Mentoring Program. Paul Fowler is Ben’s mentor.

FROM THE LAST MEETING
Rotary Central Melbourne Zoom morning meeting Tuesday 9th July 2024

Reporter: Neville Taylor
Photographer: Roger Thornton
Chair: Tom Callander

Chair Tom Callander and President Rhys Williams opened the meeting with the traditional toast to Rotary International, acknowledgement of country and traditional owners of the many lands from which guests were currently zooming in from.

Guest Speaker: Jo Garrety  – Rotary Central Melbourne – Member Profession Presentation

Jo is a proud member of Rotary Central Melbourne and was introduced as the of Managing Director of SALT3, Australia’s leading traffic, waste & environmental sustainability consultancy, which coincidentally just celebrated its 10th birthday.

Backed by a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and MBA, Jo has 23 years of experience in the field.  SALT3 was born from her passion about engineering, helping others, making positive change, leadership, inspiring people and communities.  Following stints in small and large firms, the most recent having 6,000 employees, Jo now leads SALT3, a progressive and nimble team of 17 with diverse skills in engineering and science.  Interestingly the only single team member Jo highlighted was her Mum, Michelle, managing the accounts.

The vision is to be recognised by clients as the transportation, waste management and environment engineering professionals of choice.   This certainly seems to be succeeding with SALT3 now working with all layers of government and the private sector in providing services with contracts across many areas of Australia.

Jo gave a fascinating array of former and current projects involving investigations, road safety audits, reports and problem solving. Of particular interest was the way in which SALT3 is engaged in meeting the requirements of ‘Plan Victoria’ which generated many questions from members. Jo’s presentation is available for anyone interested. Please contact Reporter, Nev2, at neville.taylor5@bigpond.com.

Entry #2: Rotary’s two official mottoes

At the 1950 Rotary International Convention in Detroit, Michigan, USA, two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. He Profits Most Who Serves Best was modified to They Profit Most Who Serve Best in 2004 and to its current wording, One Profits Most Who Serves Best, in 2010.

PHILLIP ISLAND TREE PLANTING DAY

Saturday, 3 August 2024

In 2018, Rotary Central Melbourne donated a trailer to the Phillip Island Landcare group.  The trailer had done sterling service to the club for its Community Village project.  When that project finished, the trailer was surplus to the club's needs, so a new home was found for it.

The Landcare group now uses it for their planting days and for promoting their activities at community events.  The gift from RCM is still recognised by our (old) branding on the trailer.

The intention at the time of the donation was that the club would join the Landcare group for planting days as part of its hands on service activities.  We have had three successful planting days over the last three years and we plan to go again this year.

It is proposed we join with the Landcare group and other volunteers on Saturday, 3 August. Planting will be at the same site as last year - 300 Watts Road, Ventnor. The day starts with morning tea at 9.30 am and we plant from 10 to 12.30, followed by lunch. Refreshments and lunch are provided by the Landcare group.

All that people need to bring are sturdy footwear, gloves, a water bottle and wet weather gear.

You too could look this happy!

Please confirm your participation with Roger Thornton – 0400 999 203 / rogert1000@gmail.com.
