GUEST SPEAKER  Zoom MEETING 26th OCTOBER, 2021
SHIRLEY GLANCE
“Living with Polio”

At the very young age of 14 months, I contracted poliomyelitis, and as a consequence had to spend many months at the Royal Children’s Hospital followed by attending Yooralla school for the disabled. I entered mainstream schooling at the age of 7. When I was 14 years old, I had my first of many operations on my polio leg. It was a daunting experience and I remember being asked as I was being wheeled down to theatre “are you having your tonsils out?” I believe that was my ‘light bulb moment’: I needed to speak up for myself.

FROM THE LAST MEETING - 19th October

President Elias opened the meeting with Acknowledgement to Country

Peter Duras Chaired the meeting and proposed the toast to Rotary International.

Guest Speakers: Gerard & Sabrina Watt – “Farming in a Flash”

Peter introduced the ‘inspirational Merino farmers’ Gerard and Sabrina Watt who spoke from their property at Balmoral, Victoria. Gerard described himself as an accidental farmer, who has lived the world’s longest gap year on his multi-generational family property Woodbine.

Gerard has been involved in producing fine wool, lamb and mutton since 1974 running around 7,000 sheep on their 2000-acre property. They produce 50,000 kg super fine wool which is largely exported to Europe via China for initial processing and 700 fat lambs pa.  They factor in the significant variation in price they receive from their wool: $2-$16 per kg (current price).

They noted significant labour shortages; the 57 average year of farmers; poor internet in country areas; and poor health outcomes for many on the land.

Career highlights included becoming involved with a Benchmarking group in 1990; progressing extensive sustainability projects on the property to revegetate the environment which has significantly increased the biodiversity.

They were pleased young people have been coming back to the land; Commodity prices are strong; technology such as solar pumps are working well; technological assistance with shearing and the use of drones. Best things include the variety; flexibility; strong bond to community; a good place to raise our family and connection to nature.

Attendees were impressed with the most pristine shearing shed you have ever seen and 500-year-old redgums

YEAR 11-12 SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS AVAILABLE FROM OCTOBER 1st
Year 11-12 Scholarship Grants Available from October 1st

The District Foundation Year 11-12 Scholarship Program has been enormously effective in assisting talented and motivated students facing financial hardship to complete their secondary education. Most recipients so far have also gone on to commence tertiary education. Clubs have also used this opportunity to strengthen their relationship with local schools and inspire participation in other Rotary Youth programs.

The District Foundation Committee is once again inviting D9800 clubs to participate in this program. Ten Year 11-12 Scholarship Grants will be made available this year for clubs to offer to local schools for the 2022-2023 school years. The grant of $1,000 will match your club’s contribution of $1,000 to provide the scholarship over the two-year period.

If your club would like to take this opportunity to participate, we recommend starting discussions with your candidate school now.

Applications will open on October 1st 2021 and will close on Friday November 12th 2021. Preference will be given to clubs who have not previously had a scholarship grant, after which it will be first come first served.

Application forms and grant guidelines can be downloaded from the District 9800 website:

Alternatively, email the Chair of the District 9800 Humanitarian Grants Committee Richard Blakeman and request the forms be emailed to you:  foundation.grants@rotary9800.org
ROTARY WALK WITH US TO END POLIO

Rotary Walk with Us to End Polio

Following a very successful event in 2020 Rotarians, friends and the community are encouraged once again to take action from October 1st to 31st to raise awareness, funds, and support to end poliomyelitis, a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens the children of the world today. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary worldwide has helped to reduce polio cases from an average of 1000 cases per day in 1987 to a total of only 140 cases in 2020, a 99.9% reduction.

The Rotary Walk With Us campaign throughout October is a fun way to raise awareness and funds to End Polio Now.

Using Rotary’s friendly website (www.rotarywalkwithus.org), you can register to walk and set distance and fundraising goals. Alternatively, you can donate to someone who is walking. For the walkers the total distance you have set for the month is accumulated over the entire month of October. So you can walk when, where and with whom you want in a COVID-safe way. Each walk is logged on the website along with all donations. It’s easy.
