Inside the Forensic Services Department of Victoria Police
The Victoria Police Forensic Services Department is one of the largest providers of forensic science services in Australia. Forensic examinations may be scene examinations, or exhibit examinations.
Scene examinations – Forensic staff attend and examine many serious crime scenes including homicides, suspicious fires, clandestine drug laboratories, cannabis crops and recovery of bodies after a disaster.
Exhibit examinations – The Forensic Services Department examines more than 55,000 exhibits per year. Exhibits are collected from scenes and from persons (suspects, complainants, deceased and convicted persons).
Assistance to the Courts – Results provide assistance to the justice process and the courts. The Court may accept the written report or sometimes the experts are required to present their evidence in Court.
About 230 people were at the meeting at the RACV, and the event raised $9000 for charity. It included the auction of a bottle of 1967 Grange Hermitage (donated by a member of RCCMS) which fetched $950.
PHF RECOGNITION; CITATION FOR DR JAMES LEONG
President Roy Garrett presented Dr James Leong of Dandenong Hospital with Paul Harris Fellow recognition. Dr Leong is a Melbourne plastic surgeon who has transformed the lives of many third-world children with large-scale face disfigurements. He has done pro bono work for 12 years for Interplast, ROMAC and Children’s First.
His latest big case involved a 12-year-old Viet girl Linh Da Vo who had a painful tumor engulfing her face. Dr Leong mobilised a team of more than 30 volunteers last August to remove it and start reconstructing her features. The eight-hour operation was one of the most complex of his career, he said.
Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle forecasts that Melbourne will overtake Sydney to become Australia’s biggest capital city in a little more than a decade.
He was speaking at the 22nd annual Paul Harris Breakfast of the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne-Sunrise on November 18. He said that while Sydney boasts its 22 hectare Barangaroo redevelopment, Melbourne’s redevelopment schedule covers 610ha.
About 230 people were at the meeting at the RACV, and the event raised $9000 for charity. It included the auction of a bottle of 1967 Grange Hermitage (donated by a member of RCCMS) which fetched $950.
Doyle said that while Southbank was 90% complete and Docklands half complete, Fishermen’s Bend covered 200ha and the renewal program had not even started there. Expressions of interest are in train for E-gate near Etihad Stadium with 25ha. That could link Docklands to North Melbourne station and create 11,500 residents and 6000 jobs. To the north is 112ha including the health, research and education precincts. The massive Arden-Macaulay precinct involves 147ha and could bring in 18,000 residents and 20,000 jobs.
All-up the renewal zones are five times the size of the present CBD, for staged development over the next 40 years. It would contribute to boosting Melbourne’s population from 4m to 5-8m.
It all started when George Mackey saw an acquaintance from years gone by and suggested they should have a beer and ‘chew the fat’.
After much chewing Rob Hines became a member of RCCMS and as with all new members the club was opened to a new circle of friends - in this case some of Rob’s Vic Racing friends who were keen to open their designer gardens to help raise funds for charity. The idea was developed and the Fundraising Committee, under the captainship of Greg Cuthbert, made several trips to Euroa to view the gardens and planning how best to deliver the event.
To ensure we had every chance of a successful day RCCMS combined with the long running established RC of Kew ‘Garden DesignFest’ [‘GDF’] to contribute $25,000 from a grateful public in the one day event at Euroa last Sunday; raised towards an overall GDF total of approx. $100,000, for a range of charities.
The partnerships of Rotary with the garden owners, our club with another Rotary club and the application of members’ skills and contacts within Rotary to organise and run this event has seen a big SUCCESS.
The Fundraising Committee is beginning to assess event feedback and hoping to see this being the start of a biennial fundraising event of the nature the club has been seeking for some years. Congratulations to all involved and to the many members who assisted in many ways.
ORDERS FOR LENTARA SPICE SETS BY 2nd DECEMBER PLEASE.
As in past years we have a Christmas Hamper project, to provide useful food items to people in our community less fortunate than ourselves.
The project supports two organisations;
Steps Outreach Programme, that works with young homeless people in the city.
Lentara UnitingCare Asylum Seeker Project, caring for 'approved' asylum seekers restricted from earning by legislation.
Each of these organisations works with different sections of our community and if we are to provide real support it is important that the contents of our hampers are appropriate. The hampers are therefore separated into two groups, RED for Steps Outreach Programme and GREEN for Lentara Asylum Seeker Project.
A list of suggested contents for the hampers has been drawn up to make life easier. CLICK HERE to view.
The LENTARA hamper includes many foods not easily obtained in appropriate portions and, once again, Margaret Thomas has offered to buy in bulk and break down into better sized packs. CLICK HERE to view content of pack.
