Supporting Disadvantaged People

In the spirit of giving, Rotarians and friends work with a variety of partners to ensure many in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves do not miss out in receiving goodwill and gifts at Christmas. In partnership with TAL Insurance, Lentara Uniting Care and Steps Outreach, our members facilitate the donations of Christmas gifts and food hampers for distribution to those in need.
Working with Steps Outreach, we are providing scholarships to school-aged children to help them engage in school and participate in activities that they would not otherwise have been able to, such as dancing, music or sport, and overcoming barriers to educational success, such as poverty, homelessness and family violence.
In May 2021, Rotary Central Melbourne signed on as a foundation member of the multi-club, Centenary of Rotary in Australia Community Service project, the Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network (RIMERN).
We joined a growing number of Rotary Clubs around Melbourne to drive an exciting hands-on service project that is collecting donated furniture, appliances and household goods, to distribute to people in need from all over inner Melbourne. The people we will be supporting will select the items that they need to set up their secure housing following long-term homelessness, escaping family violence, release from gaol and other situations of dire need.
We became involved in RIMERN because it will be a great way to support our local Melbourne community, involve our members in a fun and effective hands-on service and as a means engaging volunteers who may become new Rotarians.
