Charles Kovess: Educating grandchildren - unlocking their passion to live wonder-filled lives

Charles Kovess graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 1973 and gained his Master of Laws from Monash University in 1980. After six years of practice, he established his own law firm which subsequently merged with Barker Gosling, a national law firm. Charles was Head of the Commercial Law Department.
He has been a director of both public and private companies which has given him business experience in fields as diverse as hotels and motels, tourism facilities, restaurants, oil, gas and gold exploration, manufacturing, primary production exports, print and video media and timber milling. He has also advised a number of Australian organisations on international expansion opportunities in Hungary and Central Europe.
Following a 20-year successful law practice, Charles left the law in June 1993 to pursue his passion for increasing passion! He has found that bringing out the unique and extraordinary capacities of individuals by accessing and harnessing their passion, is the fundamental key to business success.
Charles graduated from the Business School for Entrepreneurs in Hawaii, and completed the ELI Super Teaching Course in August 1993.
He is a successful businessman, team leader, professional speaker and executive coach. He uses these extensive and complementary skills in a dynamic and passionate way to facilitate powerful lessons. He is an inspirational speaker who inspires through his passion for life, and helps organisations build world-class teams based on integrity, trust, and commitment.

The Guest Speaker was Maria Pellicano.

  • Maria is a singer, voice coach and a leader.
  • From a young age she was interested in music, initially playing the guitar.
  • The song “I’d like to teach the world to sing” inspired her and she knew, even when she was young that she wanted to be a music teacher.
  • Participation in a Pentecostal Church gave her the opportunity to hone her singing and guitar playing skills whilst a teenager.
  • It also gave her the opportunity to be a leader, organising youth groups and concerts.  This was the beginning of her professional journey.
  • Maria has had no formal music training; she leant to play “by ear”.
  • Her music and her leadership activities led to self-confidence and self-sufficiency.
  • Maria worked for some 20 years in the business world with music being an after-hours profession and a serious hobby.
  • The corporate world led Maria into the human development and training arena and she felt that she needed a change.
  • In 1998, whilst still building her business career, she started giving singing lessons to students at her home.
  • Initially there were 10 students but shortly thereafter she left the corporate world and with 100 students became a singing teacher full time with her own home studio.
  • Maria believes in “empowering people with singing being the medium”.
  • In 2006 she established her own school  - have a look at www.musicreacher.com.au.
  • Maria stressed that “singing allows you to connect with your body - emotion is important, not just the mechanics of forming the sounds”
  • More recently Maria has become a voice coach, specialising in helping people with public speaking and communication – have a look at www.mariapellicano.com.
  • In summary, Maria said that “your voice is the organ of your soul’.  “You take your voice with you”

  • All Members are part of the “Membership Team”.
  • With RCM there are 5 key Value Propositions for potential Members  -  Make a difference, Fellowship. Networking, Mentoring and the Profile/Image of Rotary
  • The Committee takes a strategic/holistic approach to the recruitment process.
  • It is critical to have a pipeline of potential Members and to highlight the range of projects undertaken by RCM.
  • Also, the Committee assists new Members to understand the Rotary pathway – Club, District, National, International.
  • RCM currently has 64 Members, down from 66 at the start of this Rotary year.
  • Neville raised the question – “what should be our target for Membership for the 2020/2021 Rotary year?
  • Importantly, all RCM Members must be involved.

RCM Meeting notes 9 June 2020
President Warwick opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.
Chairman Suvam Ganguli proposed the toast to Rotary International, and introduced the Guest Speaker, Trish Shilton

Guest Speaker, Trish Shilton – Reclaiming your creative power

Trish is the founder of The Mind Gallery, a boutique business that helps organisations to develop and exploit innovative ideas in the workplace. Her start-point for her business was the question: “When ideas pop into your mind, are they immediately followed by reasons not to do it?” She explained that this is what happens with most of us – we experience a reflex action that snuffs out the idea.
The use of painting to trigger the process was not well received by potential clients, so Trish did the natural thing and focussed on football to generate traction in her new business. Kevin Sheedy and the Essendon Football Club was her first client, and his testimonial was the springboard that allowed Trish to kick-start her business in corporate Australia. Trish’s Team Murals are now hanging in corporate boardrooms across Australia.
Why do we snuff out ideas - time/confidence/process etc? Trish asserted that by about seven years of age most of our innovation has been suppressed. But it has only been supressed and can be recovered. “Doing a few things differently” can stimulate creativity – listening to different music, taking a different route to work, etc, The COVID-19 pandemic is a great example of how we are doing things differently on a mass scale.
Trish shared two tools that can increase creative potential:
  • A X10 tool to trick your brain into generating ideas – how to generate ten new ideas in three minutes, while keeping your logical brain at bay. The tool is used to create and prioritise ideas, with a focus on the top one-to-three ideas.
  • Utilise the unconscious mind to visualise a goal or an objective: tell your reticular activating system what is important to you and to bring your vision into sharp focus. The more people you can bring along who believe your Vision the more you can increase the collective creative potential of the organisation.

Trish was thanked for her presentation by Suvram and Warwick.
Special General Meeting to authorise the new Constitution and Bylaws.
Chaired by President Warwick the new model Constitution was developed by Rotary International and District 9800 and was endorsed unanimously by RCM members. The new Bylaws were similarly endorsed unanimously by RCM members.
Director’s Report – Youth
Elias Lebbos spoke about progress in developing the relationship with Prince’s Hill Secondary College, five students from which were sponsored to the Science Experience at Melbourne University in January 2020. RCM sponsored a student to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra in January 2020, and we supported an aboriginal child from Kerang Primary School to attend the Somers Camp.
RCM continues to support the Silk Miller Scholarship.
Brett Jones conducted his inquisition of Anne King
Anne arrived in Australia as a six-year-old when her parents immigrated from the UK. She spoke about her admiration for her parents in making such a huge decision. Her mother initially hated Melbourne and the family soon moved to Adelaide where Anne went to school at Salisbury high School. It was a rough school, and she left as soon as she could. Anne then spent 29 years in the Commonwealth Bank.
Anne is a seasoned backpacker – England, Egypt, the Greek Islands, South America, India, and Thailand were the destinations for her very first trip as a backpacker with a friend. She has been a member of three different Rotary Clubs – Adelaide, Wagga Wagga and then Central Melbourne.

Bearbrass Probus on Facebook
Plea to visit our Bearbrass Probus on Facebook

Tony Thomas begs members to go to our club-sponsored Bearbrass Probus and “Like” if not “Love” the funny and beautiful stuff there. Here’s why: Bearbrass is switching from web to Facebook as its key communicating and recruiting tool. The more “likes” we get the more the mysterious Facebook algorithms take notice of our club and push us towards potential members. With no “likes” or interest, the algorithms decide Bearbrass is just a dog.
The good news is that Bearbrass virus-wise is out of intensive care and stacking on members – our last committee meeting inducted six recruits, for example. We are now pushing towards 40 members, although this includes a number who are inactive till the lockdown ends. If you’re feeling the world is becoming a not-nice place, check out our little Facebook video about two little best-friend girls re-uniting in Kentucky. Guaranteed to warm your heart…
