GUEST SPEAKER - 03 SEPTEMBER 2024

Neil Cole: Trials and Tribulations – Living and Succeeding with Bipolar Mood Disorder

Former Victorian MP Neil Cole publicly revealed his bipolar mood disorder during his time in Parliament in the 1990s. He resolved to devote his post-Parliamentary years to mental health advocacy and counselling. Neil will share his experiences of bipolar disorder over several decades of his life.

Neil is living an incredibly colourful, successful and varied career so far. One might say that he is an overachiever. Starting as a lawyer in 1980, Neil helped set-up the Flemington Community Legal Service.

He was a Melbourne City Councillor, a State Member of Parliament in the 1990s and Shadow Attorney General in the '90s.

He’s a playwright – penning and performing in his first, award-winning production, “Alive At Williamstown Pier” in 1995. His prolific writing has seen all 35 of his penned plays being produced, both here in Australia and in the US.

Neil is an academic researcher, culminating in his Associate Professorship at Monash University, working at the Alfred Psychiatric and Research Centre, which focuses on lived experience of mental illness.

Oh – and Neil has bipolar mood disorder – and has dedicated his life to speaking openly about mental health.

FROM THE LAST MEETING
Chair Allan Driver opened the meeting by acknowledging the humanitarian work of people around the world enabled by Rotary International.

President Rhys Williams acknowledged the traditional custodians of the lands where attendees were located and welcomed all present.

Chair Allan introduced our guest speaker, Megan Bridger-Darling, the coordinator of National Survivor’s Day.

The In Good Faith Foundation (IGFF) was established 25 years ago to help survivors of child abuse.

Following the Royal Commission which investigated institutionalised child abuse in 2016, IGFF decided to establish an annual day (2nd Tuesday in November) to acknowledge and commemorate the survivors of child abuse.

IGFF was invited in 2023 by 2 State Governors, the NT Administrator and a State Premier to hold morning teas with front line workers in Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, Hobart and Melbourne Premier.

At one of the morning teas, a leader quietly mentioned that he and his brothers had been abused as children by their father.

The Governor General has invited IGFF to meet with her and parliamentarians in Canberra to discuss how National Survivor Day should be held in 2024.

Approximately 1 in 5 Australians are survivors of child abuse and many never disclose their abuse even to the closest people in their lives.

Megan requested us to consider how we might remember National Survivor’s Day on Tuesday 12th November.

Chair Allan thanked Megan for her presentation and shining a light on this challenging issue.

In response to questions from members, Megan shared some of the advocacy work that IGFF is doing with State Attorneys General to change laws on how civil prosecutions of alleged child abusers are conducted and how convicted abusers are sentenced.

Chair Allan invited announcements from members.
  • Tom Callander reminded us and work colleagues to donate unused mobile phones to help women experiencing or at the risk of experiencing domestic violence. Please contact Tom if you have phone(s) to donate by Tuesday 3rd September.
  • Peter Duras reminded us of the Donations In Kind working bee on Saturday 7th September from 9am to 12:30pm. Please contact Frank O’Brien if you can help.
Chair Allan invited President Rhys to make his announcements.
  • President Rhys introduced Julia Ogas, who is a viola player spending 6 weeks in Melbourne as part of the Next Generation Service Exchange program. Julia will be playing in four Opera Victoria performances of La Boheme.
  • Members who had not paid their 2024/25 membership fees were reminded to do so.
  • Mary Voice will become an Honorary member of Rotary Central Melbourne to recognize her meritorious service over 20+ years.
  • Patricia Wilson will become a member of Rotary Central Melbourne. Patricia will be inducted on Tuesday 3rd September.
  • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging and Peace Building initiatives will be coordinated by Club Service.
  • Cecily Neil has stepped down as the International Service Director due to health. Fleur Maidment has agreed to become the International Service Director.
Chair Allan closed the meeting highlighting ways in which we can demonstrate “the Magic of Rotary”.

RCM CONTRIBUTION TO VNF BUILD A FUTURE PROGRAM

Ms Puja Ganguli provided an introduction to creative problem solving.

Please click this link https://vietnamfoundation.org.au/category/updates/ to (the first three) articles which report on VNF’s Build a Future Program’s summer camps which ISC put $4K into the previous Rotary year and which occurred in July 2024. I think that these cover the use of the donation adequately. Our contribution of $4K made a contribution to the general expenditure for the camps- travel, accommodation and food, hotel hire, consumables, speakers costs. The full cost was a little over $10K. Rhys Williams and Puja Ganguli attended and participated in the workshops. Puja ran a lively, interactive session on creative problem solving which introduced students to innovation and entrepreneurship.

As the program expands organisers will be looking to members for mentoring employability skills and providing English conversational practice.

For further information people can contact Pres. Rhys.

MORE OLD MOBILE PHONES WANTED
DO YOU HAVE OLD MOBILE PHONES?

CAN YOU DONATE THEM FOR OUR DV SAFE PHONE PROJECT?

This project supports the DV Safe Phone National Plan to end violence against women and children and to end gender based violence within one generation.

We collect “no longer wanted” mobile phones for DV safe phone a registered charity based in Mooloolaba, Queensland. The phones are repaired and given to domestic violence survivors to assist their safety and security.

We had our first successful collection last May. Its now time for our next collection. Please speak to your family, friends and work colleagues.

Phones should have content erased, although DV Safe Phone will ensure that occurs in any event. For iPhones it is important to sign out of our iCloud and iTunes and Appstore. For Android or Samsung Galaxy, it is important to sign out of accounts and encrypt old data before erasing device. We can provide simple steps instructions.

Next steps:
  • Look for your old phones.
  • Email Tom Callander tcallander@rigbycooke.com.au if you can donate them.
  • Erase data (if possible). Ask for the simple steps instructions if required.
  • Bring phones to our next in person meeting at RACV on 3 September 2024 (alternatively make other arrangements with Tom Callander).
  • We will then deliver all phones to DV Safe Phone.
