ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM LAST MEETING
Announcements from Meeting, 6 October 2025
Neville John - advised the Collingwood Bunnings BBQ on, “Lift the Lid” Saturday, generated a net profit of $1409. ” Lift the Lid” is an Australian Rotary Health annual fund-raising activity supported by RCM. He expressed the club’s thanks to the members and friends who staff the BBQ’s and those who add significant support behind the scenes in logistic roles. Profits from the
BBQs provide a net profit of $36-38,000 annually.

Campbell Chambers – requested more help with donations of items for the Paul Harris Breakfast,18 November. Now is the time to assemble suitable items as raffle prizes and more substantial items for the auction -both activities contribute the major portion of net profit of this annual function. Please contact Campbell and let him have a photo and description of your contribution.
Rohan Williams, Neville John and Michael Lapina – launched a club wide membership drive.
  • Some of our most active members will start to reduce their involvement over the next decade for several reasons.
  • We will need to renew by recruiting and retaining a net gain of at least 20 members, to ensure that we remain a vibrant club.
  • Actions taken in 2016/17 resulted in 58 people joining Rotary Central Melbourne over a 10-year period.
    • Over that period, a key action taken was that members shared their Rotary story with family, friends and work colleagues and invited them to participate in a service activity and/or attend a meeting.
  • Why not share your Rotary story with at least one person during October and invite them to join us in a service activity and/or at a meeting if they would like to learn more.
Please note that a member’s adult children and grandchildren, may join Rotary and will not be charged Rotary International and District fees.
President Rohan wished everyone success in our membership drive.

DIK You Have Done It Again!
Ahhh DIK…..YOU”VE DONE IT AGAIN

Reporter – Frank O’Brien
Our Club, along with other Clubs in D9800 and beyond, was recently advised by DIK that it had received a large quantity of used, laundered single bed linen sets (in excess of 1300) in excellent condition which was on offer for collection by Rotary Clubs from its Warehouse in West Footscray.
Cutting to the chase, our Community Service C’tee quickly went into action via Pauline and I and the bottom line is as follows:
  • Over 60 sets of bed linen (including Doonas, Doona Covers, Sheets and Pillow Cases were sourced.
  • Deliveries were made to BASP (Brigidine Assylum Seekers Project), Sacred Heart School, Fitzroy and St Vincent de Paul Conference, Balwyn North/East Kew. All bed linen sets will be provided to persons in necessitous circumstances/ social housing.
  • Value of the goods delivered was estimated to be in excess of $2200.
  • The bulk of the linen sets were taken up by Clubs supporting overseas projects so it was great to support “needy” locals, which is whom DIK is now also supporting .

Prof Ross Garnaut AC: Exploring economic opportunities in a post-carbon world

This is a rare opportunity to be stimulated by one of Australia’s leading thinkers on one of our most critical issues. Professor Garnaut currently heads the Superpower Institute in Melbourne. Its mission is to position Australia as a global leader in the post-carbon economy.

Much of our wealth has come from coal and gas exports, but this cannot continue. The Institute believes Australia’s natural resources can drive prosperity by developing and exporting green, energy-intensive commodities. Meeting this challenge is vital for jobs, wealth, and emissions reduction towards net zero.

Professor Garnaut will outline both the opportunities and risks of action or inaction. For decades, he has brought clarity to the net-zero debate. His career includes:

  • Australian Ambassador to China (1985-88);

  • Author of Garnaut Climate Change Reviews over nearly 20 years for Australian governments;

  • Leadership roles in major enterprises including Ok Tedi Mines, PNG.

Venue: Windsor Hotel, 111 Spring Street, Melbourne.

Ground Floor, Corner Spring and Bourke Streets, Melbourne CBD (ample parking garages close by).

Time: 7:15am for 7:30am to 9:00am.

Tickets: $75 per head OR $700 per table of 10 (incl. GST).
For table bookings of 10, please forward names and emails of guests to Rhys Williams at rhys0908@msn.com.
